Note: <888> 08/31/04  Tuesday 11:55 P.M.:  I went outside, and I threw out some garbage.  I mailed a letter in the letter box down in the mail room.  If one happens to be walking downtown on Greenwich Avenue, and it seems a bit pricey, the second biggest business in town after real estate is represented on West Putnam Avenue with lots of automobile show rooms, and the restaurants which are more expensive than the grocery stores such as McDonalds, Wendy's, and Duncan Donuts are also on West Putnam Avenue, so one can have a big Mac and look at the latest Mercedes Benz.  We happen to have a large German population in residence in town, and judging by all of the German automobiles for sale in this town, somebody from Germany must be making money off the sales of all of the German automobiles.  However, I once read that the Ford family through their private shares in Ford Motor Company and through the Ford Foundation control about 80% of the Ford Motor Company's stock worldwide, so obviously though they are not as expensive as Mercedes Benz, somebody obviously makes money off Fords.  I also once read that Margaret Thatcher lived in Henry Ford's private apartment in London, and I always wondered what she did if Henry showed up.  I also read recently that Margaret Thatcher is currently on vacation in the United States of America, so besides what one sees on the television, there are also people whom frequently visit in this area from other areas, and thus I have come to regard the United States of America as the giant rest area for those people from the western half of the eastern hemisphere going to visit the eastern half of the eastern hemisphere and visa versa.  Thus living in this area, we always see lots of people from Europe traveling to Asia and lots of people from Asia traveling to Europe.  I once recall seeing both Margaret Thatcher and Mao Tse Tung traveling to opposite continents in New York, while they were not paying official visits to the United States of America, and one has to release being a communications and transportation hub in this area close to New York City, we get a lot of people traveling through this area on their way to other destinations.  Also in Florida this time of year as well as Southern California there tends to be people from Argentina and Chile and Australia and South Africa and New Zealand trying to avoid the winters in the southern hemisphere.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/31/04  Tuesday 11:25 P.M.:  I finished watching the republican convention.  Since there seems to be an increase of other activity in this area other than the normal routines, I am a little bit busier downtown than normal, thus I do not have the time to spend as much time on the computer as I normally do.  However, as it begins to get cooler in this area and the area begins to slow down to its slower more indoor type of activity, I will try to resume more of my regular computer activity.  Since there are a great many computer people in this area, the computer activity is important in terms of keeping ordinary communications on other events outside of this area that might otherwise escape the local media such as www.geocities.com/mikelscott/weather.htm , however once the hurricane season is over down south the general opinion of the southern people whom live down south is that we have a worse time during our long winters than they do during their hurricane seasons.  Thus, I guess it depends on what one is use to on a four seasons basis in whatever environment that one happens to live in.  Quite frankly we spend some very cold days in this town during the winter, which visitors during the summer might not realize.  Also we have a lot of residents from further north in the north country whom live here because they think the winters are milder here than further up north.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/31/04  Tuesday 7:40 P.M.:  I went outside briefly.  I made and ate my usual salad www.geocities.com/mikelscott/salad.htm .  For the cheddar cheese portion, I used Stop and Shop Wisconsin extra sharp cheddar cheese.  I had the salad with all of the other usual ingredients.  I ate the salad with a glass of iced tea.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/31/04  Tuesday 5:50 P.M.:  I checked the mail.  I noticed at www.geocities.com/mikelscott/weather.htm Hurricane Frances is now tracking further north around Coco Beach and Daytona Beach http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ftp/graphics/AT06/refresh/AL0604W5+GIF/312053W5.gif , but it is such a big storm, it looks like it will effect most of the state of Florida.  If one were on limited income in the state of Florida, one could take a Greyhound Bus or Amtrak train to Atlanta and stay in an inexpensive motel like a Days Inn, but at the moment the storm still keeps changing course, so it might yet come ashore in at the barrier islands of Georgia or the Carolinas.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/31/04  Tuesday 5:20 P.M.:  I was up at 9 A.M..  I had breakfast of oatmeal, toast with strawberry jam, orange juice, vitamins, supplements, and coffee.  I went outside briefly, and I chatted with some neighbors.  I cleaned up, and I went out.  I went by the Greenwich Hospital Thrift Shop.  Bags of clothing and linens are $10 and everything else is half price.  I went downtown, and I spent a dollar on parking for 2 hours, and I walked the entire length of Greenwich Avenue, and I sat out at various locations.  I chatted with various people.  I stopped by the Greenwich Hardware store.  If one is looking for a low budget lunch in downtown Greenwich, there is a hot dog truck parked by the Greenwich Common.  Also across the street from the Greenwich Train station on Railroad Avenue, at Harrington's of Vermont http://www.harringtonham.com/ they make sandwiches to go for about $6 or $7 which tend to be gourmet sandwiches.  I noticed while getting into my car, the door stop guide was lose where it is attached to the frame.  I drove down by the waterfront.  I then went by the Greenwich Library, and I fixed the door stop guide by tightening the bolt with a wrench kit that I keep in the hatchback area of my car.  I then went into the Greenwich Library, and I read the Greenwich Time.  I next returned home, and I drank some iced tea.  I noticed that my Minolta QMS PagePro 1250W laser printer was not working, but I fixed it since when I changed USB cables on it, I did not push the USB cable far enough into the printer, so now it works.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/30/04  Monday 10:10 P.M.:  Down in Florida, somebody better tell Jeb Bush, they better hold on to their hats www.geocities.com/mikelscott/weather.htm , NRL Monterey Satellite Photos , http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ftp/graphics/AT06/refresh/AL0604W5+GIF/302053W5.gif , and http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/index.shtml .  I chatted with a relative.  I have been watching the Republican convention from nearby Manhattan.  Manhattan is the name of the Indian tribe that my family bought the farm from in 1640.  I suppose if any frugal republicans come out here to check out the area, they can always get an inexpensive meal at the Greenwich Hospital providing they have the energy to walk from the Greenwich train station about 1.35 miles north to the Greenwich Hospital.  Of course there are a lot more expensive dining establishments along the way.  Of course in the day time, one can always go the delicatessen at the Stop and Shop.  I suppose one could always splurge on a steak sandwich from Maneros or a Subway sandwich up towards the top of Greenwich Avenue.  Alas, since we are close to Manhattan, our prices tend to be similar to those of Manhattan.  Of course the Blimpie Sandwich shop still sells an egg and croissant sandwich for a dollar.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/30/04  Monday 8:15 P.M.:  I made and ate my usual salad www.geocities.com/mikelscott/salad.htm .  Instead of tuna fish, I used a tin of sardines that I chopped.  For the cheddar cheese portion, I used Stop and Shop Wisconsin extra sharp cheddar cheese.  I had the salad with a glass of iced tea.  I watched a bit of the Republican convention.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/30/04  Monday 6:50 P.M.:  I went out after the last message.  I went by the Greenwich Hospital Thrift Shop.  Everything is half price and bags of clothing and linens are $10.  I bought a six outlet power strip with surge protector for .50.  I then went by Putnam Trust Bank of New York on Mason Street.  I then drove down by the waterfront.  They are in the process of scraping off the old asphalt off Steamboat Road, and I guess once the weather is nice, they will be repaving it again.  Greenwich Capital Royal Bank of Scotland is also repaving their court yard.  I next went downtown, and I walked the entire length of Greenwich Avenue.  I stopped by the Greenwich Hardware store, and one of their sales representatives inquired about Microsoft Windows XP SP2, and I told the sales representative that I had a copy on CD in my car, so I walked back to my car, and I got it, and I gave it to the Greenwich Hardware store sales representative.  The sales representative said they had a Dell computer running Windows XP, so it should install without any problems.  I explained they should copy the SP2 upgrade file on the CD to the hard drive and install from the hard drive.  I next stopped by CVS, and I bought a two pack of CVS automatic blue tablet toilet bowl cleaner for $1.29 for two tablets plus .08 tax for $1.37 total.  Recently the CVS Clorox toilet bowl tablets that I usually buy for $1.99 have not been dissolving in my toilet tank, possibly because there is more chlorine in the water.  I completed my walk.  I then went by the Greenwich Library, and I read the Greenwich Time.  I next went by the Stop and Shop, and I bought a 16 ounce jar of Planters Dry Roasted peanuts for $1.99, a package of Twinings five packages of five different varieties of tea for 25 bags total for $3.19, and fresh broccoli crowns at $1.69 a pound for $1.22 for $6.40 total.  I returned home.  I noticed out by our dumpster someone left a Bissell upright vacuum cleaner that looks like it might work with a full bag.  If it did work there is vacuum shop in Byram and another shop nearby in Port Chester, New York that might have the Bissell bags.  I drank some iced tea.  I put the power strip connected to the other power strip on the floor by the living room desk with two extension cords plugged into it, so it is available for use with laptop computers should the need arise in the apartment with my LAN cables connected to the cable modem.  I set my computer to display all the icons in the tray when it starts up.  Some times one has to log off and log back on to get them all to display.  Also today the D-Link LAN has not been installing on boot up, but if one turns on and off the Siemens router, once the computer is booted the D-Link LAN installs.  I also have the RealTek motherboard onboard LAN connected, and I have the two LANs bridged together.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/30/04  Monday 2:00 P.M.:  I woke up during the night, and  I ate some smoked almonds.  I was up at 10 A.M., and I had breakfast of oatmeal, toast with strawberry jam, orange juice, vitamins, supplements, and coffee.  I went outside, and I picked up the mail.  I went back to bed until 1:30 P.M..  I finished eating the can of smoked almonds.  It is clear now, but we are suppose to get some rain later on this afternoon.  I will now clean up, and I will go out.  The computer seem to be running just fine, but of course, since I have it set on PIO mode for the IDE ports, it is a bit slower.  Yahoo! Note: <888> 08/29/04  Sunday 6:35 P.M.:  I ate half a 10 ounce can of CVS smoked almonds with some iced tea.  It seems there is a bit of tropical storm activity coming our way www.geocities.com/mikelscott/weather.htm

Note: <888> 08/29/04  Sunday 5:50 P.M.:  I went out after the last message.  I went downtown, and I walked the entire length of Greenwich Avenue, and I sat out at various locations.  It is a bit warm out.  I then returned home, and I drank a cold 12 ounce can of Diet Coca Cola www.coke.com in a cold frosted mug.  I then drank some cold filtered water in the same cold frosted mug.  While downtown, and I noticed that the stone masons are putting the facing stones on a new Brooks Brothers http://www.brooksbrothers.com/  store just north of the Greenwich Hardware store just north of Saks Fifth Avenue http://www.saksfifthavenue.com/Entry.jsp .  CIO

Note: <888> 08/29/04  Sunday 3:45 P.M.:  For my meal, I took a 14.75 ounce can of Bumble Bee Alaska King salmon that I procured back on sale at CVS early this June when it was on sale for .99 a can as it is this week.  I removed the lid, and I used the lid to squeeze out the water.  I then put the canned salmon on a dinner plate, and I picked through it with my fingers about a half inch diameter section at a time removing all the quarter inch in diameter small bones that felt hard to the fingers.  I do this very carefully so as not to have any bones in the salmon.  I then put it in the Cuisinart food processor with a third of a cup of Arnold regular cut seasoned croutons, 1/8th of a teaspoon of Old Bay seasoning, a dash of ground pepper, a few dashes of celery salt, and 1/8th of a teaspoon of Italian spices and a tablespoon of La Choy low salt soy sauce, and I ran the Cuisinart food processor until it was an even consistency removing the lid occasionally to mix it with a mixing spoon, so all of the ingredients were evenly mixed together.  I then formed the salmon mixture into three round paddies about 3/4 inch in diameter, and I put them on a plate to have available for cooking.  I then rinsed in a steel bowl under hot water a cup of Carolina enriched rice, and I then put the rice in a wire strainer, and I rinsed it underneath hot water, and I put the rice in the China Village Rice cooker with 14 ounces of water, a teaspoon of sesame oil, a tablespoon of olive oil, a tablespoon of La Choy low salt soy sauce, a few dashes of Old Bay seasoning, 1/8th of a teaspoon of Italian spices, a couple dashes of ground pepper, a few dashes of celery salt, a couple of dashes of India hot curry, and a few dashes of Chinese five spice seasoning.  I put the inner and out lids on the China Village rice cooker, and I put in the General Electric microwave oven on high for 11 minutes.  I then let it sit for five minutes with the lid on after cooking, so the rice absorbs the moisture.  Ten minutes before the rice is finished sitting, I put four tablespoons of olive oil in a frying pan, and I brought it to a simmer over medium high electric burner heat about four minutes time, and then I put the three salmon patties in the frying pan, and I cooked them two and a half minutes a side until brown on the outside, and then I added about tablespoon of La Choy low salt soy sauce and a couple of tablespoons of lemon juice, and I let them simmer for about two minutes on one side, and then I flipped them and added about tablespoon of La Choy low salt soy sauce and a couple of tablespoons of lemon juice, and I simmered them another two minutes on the second side.  I took half of the rice, and I spread it about a half inch thick over a regular size dinner plate, and I put the thee salmon cakes evenly spaced on the rice with any remaining cooking juices on them.  I then sprinkled on a coating of grated Romano cheese on each salmon cake, and I sprinkled a little dried parsley on them.  I had the meal with a glass of iced tea.  I put away my laundry.  Earlier today before I went out, and I refilled the Glade plug-in scent refill by prying off the lid with a screw driver, and with a tiny funnel I keep on the Danish bar, I filled it about 60% full with English Leather cologne and about 40% 90% isopropyl alcohol, and I put the lid back on, and I reused the refill.  I will now shut down the computer, and I will go back out.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/29/04  Sunday 2:05 P.M.:  I was up at 9 A.M., and I had breakfast of oatmeal, toast with strawberry jam, orange juice, vitamins, supplements, and coffee.  I put clean linens on the bed in the bedroom.  I showered and cleaned up.  I went downtown, and I stopped by the Exxon gasoline station next to the Greenwich Library, and I bought $6 of regular unleaded gasoline at $2.239 a gallon for about 29 miles per gallon usage this week.  I then went downtown, and I walked the entire length of Greenwich Avenue, and I sat out at various locations.  I stopped by CVS, and I bought two 10 ounce cans of CVS smoked almonds for $1.99 a can for $3.98 total.  I noticed they have 14.75 ounce cans of Bumble Bee Alaska salmon on sale for .99 a can.  I chatted with another downtown resident.  I then completed my walk.  I drove down by the waterfront.  I then returned home, and I drank some iced tea.  I started two loads of laundry, and I have a few minutes to go on the wash cycle.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/28/04  Saturday 12:50 P.M.:  I finished updating and a few minor tweaks on the backup computers.  I shut them all down.  When I tested restarting the Linksys 8 port hub in the bedroom with one of the backup computers, it started up and went online without any problems.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/28/04  Saturday 11:55 A.M.:  I started the backup computer in the bedroom, and I had a problem getting the Linksys 8 port hub to go online.  I tried the 8 port hub from the Dell backup computer, and there was still a problem.  When I put the 8 port hub back on the Dell backup computer, it would not go online.  I disconnected the USB cable that went to the cable modem from the D-Link hub, and my hubs started working.  I guess it was causing a conflict with the hubs working off the Siemens router.  I connected that shorter USB gold cable to the Minolta QMS PagePro 1250W laser printer from the same four port hub that I had the longer USB cable on.  I put the longer USB cable back in the cable box underneath the desk in the living room.  I have connected to the Dell backup computer 8 port hub two 14 foot LAN cables and two 24 foot LAN cables ready to use in the living room.  I have them coiled with wire ties on them to keep them from becoming tangled.  The Linksys 8 port hub is working in the bedroom, but to get it to work, I connected the fifty foot cable from the living room Siemens router to the #8 port instead of the uplink port.  I have the five backup computers in the bedroom connected to it along with two 14 foot LAN cables.  I am running maintenance updates on the backup computers in the bedroom.  Since all of the computers are coming off the Siemens router, there is additional firewall protection from the Siemens router.  On some of the bedroom computer network cards, I had to set them to 10 MBS full duplex instead of auto negotiate, and all five computers seem to be running just fine.  I will turn them all off as soon as I finish the updates to see if the Linksys 8 port hub starts up and connects from shut down with the computers turned off and then started.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/26/04  Thursday 1:50 P.M.:  I went out after the last message, and I dropped off the Royal 17 inch monitor and the Dell generic 17 inch monitor at the Greenwich Hospital Thrift shop.  I then drove half way down Greenwich Avenue, and I returned home.  I made up a fresh batch of home made hummus www.geocities.com/mikelscott/hummus.htm .  I used two cloves of Elephant garlic.  I made and ate my usual salad www.geocities.com/mikelscott/salad.htm .  Instead of tuna fish, I used a tin of sardines that I chopped, and for the cheddar cheese portion, I used Stop and Shop New York extra sharp cheddar cheese.  I used all of the other regular ingredients, but I used six sliced mushrooms instead of three sliced mushrooms.  I ate the salad with a glass of iced tea.  I threw out some garbage.  I picked up my mail.  I have a 3 P.M. appointment.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/26/04  Thursday 10:40 A.M.:  I went out after the last message.  I went downtown, and I walked lower Greenwich Avenue, and I sat out at various places.  I then drove down by the waterfront.  I next went by the Greenwich Hospital Thrift Shop, and I bought the two Dell M990 Documentation: Dell M990 Color Monitor User's Guide 19 inch monitors for half price for $10 each for $20 total.  I then returned back to my apartment, and I used my cart that I keep in the back of my Hyundai hatchback to bring up the two Dell 19 inch monitors.  I connected one to the Dell backup computer.  I connected other to the AMD backup computer in the bedroom.  I moved the CompUSA 19 inch monitor with the Gateway backup computer.  I put the Dell Trinitron 17 inch monitor with HP Kayak XA backup computer.  I put HP Ultra VGA 1280 17 inch monitor with the HP dual Pentium II backup computer.  I put the generic Dell 17 inch monitor with the IBM Cyrix backup computer.  The Dell M990 monitors were manufactured in the year 2000, and they had a retail price of $400 new.  The Dell M990 monitor on the Dell backup computer has a slight 1/16 inch spec on it that won't come off, but it is not very noticeable.  I will put the 17 inch Royal monitor and the 17 inch Dell generic monitor in my car and give them back to the Greenwich Hospital Thrift shop.  I am not giving them the power cords, since I keep those for testing other units.  I have lost five pounds, and I am down to 210 pounds weight.  I will now shut down the computer, and I will go back out.  I have a 3 P.M. appointment today.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/26/04  Thursday 6:50 A.M.:  I will now shut down the computer, and I will eat a peanut butter sandwich with iced tea.  I will then clean up, and I will go out.  I have a 3 P.M. appointment today.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/26/04  Thursday 6:35 A.M.:  I went to bed after the last message.  About 9 P.M., I had a call from a fund raiser for the Greenwich Police Department.  I explained at the end of the month that I do not have much money.  The fund raiser kept being persistent, and I explained that I was the "Volunteer Chief" as in "Chief of Internet Volunteers" and as such I do not receive a compensation, and as such I can not afford to give money to the Greenwich Police Department.  The fund raiser was very persistent, and I explained that over 20 private security agencies work this town along with the Secret Service and F.B.I..  The fund raiser hung up in a huff.  I hope the fund raiser does not think that since I mentioned the figure 20 does not mean that I will give them $20.  It would seem to me that the general public pays enough money in taxes to pay for the Greenwich Police department that if they can not afford anymore, they should not have to donate when they can not afford it.  I found the caller very persistent and also calling at 9 P.M. at night was very late in my schedule yesterday after I had been asleep for over 2 hours.  I woke up at 1:30 A.M., and I ate breakfast of oatmeal, toast with strawberry jam, orange juice, vitamins, supplements, and coffee.  I then went back to bed until 6 A.M..  I watched the last five minutes of the ending of the movie "The Yellow Rolls Royce" which is one of my favorite movies.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/25/04  Wednesday 3:20 P.M.:  I went out after the last message.  I went downtown, and I walked the entire length of Greenwich Avenue, and I sat out at various locations.  I stopped by CVS, and I bought a 12 roll package of Scott 1000 sheet rolls of toilet paper for $5.99 and a liter bottle of CVS yellow mouth wash for $1.99 plus .48 tax for $8.46 total.  I then completed my walk, and I drove down by the waterfront.  I gave a copy on CD of Microsoft Windows XP SP2 RTM (released to manufacturing) on CD in Japanese to a former Japanese neighbor of mine.  A few people were fishing.  I then went by the Greenwich Hospital Thrift Shop, and I bought a Cobalt Blue with brass handle seltzer bottle made in Austria for $2.50 and 2 foot by 2 foot by 10 inch deep dark wood 2 shelf bookcase for $10.  I then went by Putnam Trust Bank of New York on Mason Street.  I then went by the Greenwich Library, and I chatted with a couple of regular users.  I then went by Stop and Shop, and I bought a 1.1 pound container of Campari tomatoes for $2.50, a bulb of elephant garlic for $1.99 and a 10 ounce box of mushrooms for $1.99 for $6.48 total.  I then went by the Arnold Bread outlet, and I bought a 5.5 ounce box of Arnold Italian style regular cut croutons for .99 and a 5.5 ounce box of Arnold Seasoned regular cut croutons for .99  and a loaf of Freihoffer's low carb oat bread for $1.05 less 10% senior discount of .30 for $2.73 total.  I then returned home.  I brought up my purchases.  I put the toilet paper in the bedroom closet with the other paper items.  I put the yellow mouth wash on the rack in the bathroom.  I put the food in the kitchen.  I rinsed out the seltzer bottle, and I put in fresh water in it, and I charged it up with a CO2 cartridge, and I put it with the other three charged seltzer bottles on the lowest shelf of the rack at the bedroom entrance.  I moved the Queen Elizabeth II whisky jug to on top of the Danish bar front and center.  I then wiped the small bookcase with a damp cloth, and I polished it with spray furniture polish.  I put it on the left wall just inside the bathroom.  I put the stereo speaker on top of it sideways on the left, along with the cranberry color Old Harbor Candle Company candle holder from Hyannisport, Massachusetts and the large yellow candle in a green ceramic bowl.  I took the folding oak dining tables that were there, and I put them on the left side entrance of the bedroom in front of the mirror hanging on the open door.  I took the mahogany magazine rack that was there, and I emptied if of most of its contents, and I put the older magazines on the lower shelf of the bathroom bookcase.  I move the steel music CD rack from the bedroom entrance to in front of the left side of the Danish bar to the left of the small brass and glass end table.  I cleaned the magazine rack with a damp cloth, and I polished it with spray furniture polish.  I move the other small brass and glass end table to the left side front of the long green sofa, and I still have the Nantucket ash tray on it, and I filled the Greenwich Country Club Zippo lighter and the United States Marine corps Zippo lighter with Ronson lighter fluid and both of the two Zippo lighters are in the Nantucket ashtray and working.  I put the magazine rack at the left end of the maple side table on the near end of the blue sofa.  I filled it with the more current magazines and other recreational reading.  I went outside a few times, and I chatted with neighbors.  DHL www.airborne.com  arrived with a delivery from Sears www.sears.com of the eight Sears Kenmore upright vacuum cleaner bags.  I guess they will deliver the two vacuum belts tomorrow.  I put a new vacuum cleaner bag in the Sears Kenmore upright vacuum cleaner, and I put the remaining seven on the top of the hanging clothes pack on the right side of my bedroom closet with the vacuum bags for the Hoover upright and Electrolux units and the Hoover belts.  I threw out the old vacuum bag.  Yesterday, I put the spare light for the Sears Kenmore upright vacuum cleaner in my top left bedroom mahogany bureau drawer with other electrical items.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/25/04  Wednesday 7:10 A.M.:  I moved the HP 4L laser printer from the right side of the AMD backup computer in the bedroom on the desk to on top of the HP 2D Laser Printer on the dining room table.  I connected its power cord to the three plug adaptor that powers the other two HP laser printers off the control panel, and it is connected to the B: port on the control box on the wicker rack on the wall to the right of the primary computer.  I set it up on the Siemens LAN port on the primary computer, and I will set it up on the backup computers at a later time, when I have time to turn them on and set it up.  I moved the IBM Cyrix 233 MHz computer from beneath the bedroom side board to on top of the AMD backup computer, and I moved the Royal monitor from on top of the right side board monitor to the right side of the AMD backup computer, and I connected the IBM Cyrix up with the monitor, LAN cable, keyboard, and mouse.  I have the keyboard resting on the monitor to give room for desk bric a brac.  Thus I have five backup computers setup and ready to go in the bedroom, but it would be a little crowded except for five tiny skinny people to try to use.  I still have the Dell backup computer and the primary computer in the living room.  I will now shut down the computer, and I will clean up, and I will go out for some daytime activity.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/25/04  Wednesday 6:05 A.M.:  I made and ate my usual salad www.geocities.com/mikelscott/salad.htm .  I did not have garlic to make a fresh batch of hummus www.geocities.com/mikelscott/hummus.htm , so I did not use hummus.  For the cheddar cheese portion, I used Stop and Shop extra sharp cheddar cheese, and I used Stop and Shop New York extra sharp cheddar cheese.  I had the salad with all of the other regular ingredients.  I ate the salad with a glass of iced tea.  CIO

DHL delivered the light bulb that I order from Sears for the Sears Kenmore upright vacuum cleaner.  I guess tomorrow they will deliver the vacuum bags and belts.  I went back to bed until 10 P.M..  I had breakfast of oatmeal, toast with strawberry jam, orange juice, vitamins, supplements, and coffee.  I went outside briefly, and I picked up my mail.  I then went back to bed until 2:30 P.M..  I will now do some regular computer work.  I also have to sort out my computer periodical literature and other periodical literature, much of which I do not have time to read, so I will throw it away.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/24/04  Tuesday 5:30 A.M.:  I checked my computer system security with Symantec Security Check , and it showed my Ping port was not Shielded but open.  As I recall when I installed Windows XP SP2, and I last tested the security all of my ports were shielded.  I tried changing some of the firewall settings for Norton Internet Security 2004, but the Ping port was still open.  I tried enabling the XP SP2 firewall, but the Ping port was still opened.  I tried some other settings to no avail.  I reset my Siemens router to the default settings.  I then uninstalled Norton Internet Security 2004 and Norton System Works 2003.  One had to do a safe boot after uninstalling them to remove the "C:\program files\common files\symantec shared" folder and its contents, so one can reinstall them.  I then reinstalled the copy of Norton Internet Security 2004 Professional by mistake that I had returned when I had problems before I got Norton Internet Security 2004.  It installed all right, so I left it on my machine, and it recommended disabling the XP SP2 firewall, which I did.  It is not that much different than Norton Internet Security 2004, but the product activation worked.  I then installed Norton System Works 2003.  I installed the updates.  However, the Symantec Security Check still shows the Ping port is open, and there does not seem to be any remedy that I can find on the internet.  I guess I will have to live with it.  Also in Internet Security 2004 Professional when I scanned for programs, it freezes, so I will add programs as they pop up with security alerts.  Also the first two Norton Win Doctor 2003 Active X scans both freeze now.  I did do a Norton Win Doctor scan of the system without the first two tests.  Overall the system is still running the same.  I still do not like having the open Ping port, since as I once recall it was shielded.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/24/04  Tuesday 12:05 A.M.:  I was up at 10 P.M., and I had breakfast of oatmeal, toast with strawberry preserves, orange juice, vitamins, supplements, and coffee.  I called up the Oyster Bay Cove, Long Island, New York 1-516-922-6363 police department about a missing person.  I was looking at this link NRL Monterey Satellite Photos and there is a hurricane like formation that has not formed yet northeast of Brazil.  Frequently people whom live by the waterfront and forget whom they are, it is caused by the fact that they spend so much time outside, that they can get hit by lightning and forget whom they are.  It happens all the time to people outdoors, camping, hiking, in the military, playing golf, mountain climbing and sailing.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/23/04  Monday 2:55 P.M.:  I microwaved and ate a Stouffer's 13 5/8 ounce chicken fettuccini lean cuisine dinner, which I ate with a glass of iced tea.  I went outside, and I chatted with a neighbor.  I had my August 30 appointment changed to September 13.  I will now shut down the computer, and I will go to bed.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/23/04  Monday 12:40 P.M.:  I remembered this morning when I was talking about International Harvester now Navistar www.navistar.com which used to be one of my neighbors in Knollwood, Illinois nearby they had a International Harvester factory in Libertyville, Illinois.  I met members of the McCormick family affiliated with that company while at college in Lake Forest, Illinois.  Of course they have other factories elsewhere too.  On one road trip across country, I happened to get tired and as usual back in the period from 1978 to 1980 during my four road trips across country, on one of those road trips I stopped by Wittenberg College now www.wittenberg.edu Wittenberg University.  I stayed at a fraternity house, and I went to a beer party before I resumed my trip the next day.  While driving around the town Wittenberg University was in named Springfield, Ohio, I noticed they had an International Harvester factory that made the personal size vehicles similar to the old Wiley's Jeep, but slightly larger.  I guess it was basically a farm vehicle for chores, but I have only seen a few of them around the country, so I guess they were not popular with the urban set, but they did not look too expensive and they were wider than the Jeep.  Possibly they still make some sort of similar vehicle there if one is in the market for a utility type vehicle.  I recall the people were very friendly there.  I found this link on the International Trucks http://www.navistar.com/site_layout/index.asp from this site http://www.ci.springfield.oh.us/ , so International is still the largest employer in Springfield, Ohio if you ever need a truck, but I am not sure if they make a personal size truck such as these http://www.navistar.com/site_layout/militarybusiness/index.asp and http://www.smartruck3.com/ , which seem to be a little more elaborate than the simple farm vehicle they made around the time that I visited.  On the farm in Knollwood, Illinois there was a 1947 International Pickup truck with a crank out front window that I actually might own still, since the person I sold it to for $10 never took possession of it.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/23/04  Monday 11:45 A.M.:  I went out after the last message.  I drove down by the waterfront and some new fishermen were there.  I went downtown, and I walked the entire length of Greenwich Avenue and the train station area.  I sat out at various locations.  I used the bathroom at Starbucks.  I then drove over to Putnam Trust Bank of New York on Mason Street.  I checked on my account, and what I did earlier this morning was the correct procedure to correct the situation, so now I will only be billed a $1.99 a month for internet banking privileges instead of $4.99 a month for internet banking with bill paying.  I then went by the Greenwich Hospital Thrift Shop.  Everything is half price and clothes and linens are $15 a brown paper bag.  I then went by the Greenwich Library, and I read the Greenwich Time.  I chatted outside with another regular library user.  I then went by the Stop and Shop, and I bought 10 ounces of fresh spinach for $1.99, a 16 ounce bag of baby carrots for $1.99, and fresh broccoli from Maine for .99 a pound for $1.25 for $5.23 total.  I then returned home, and I picked up my mail.  I drank some iced tea.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/23/04  Monday 5:25 A.M.:  After the last message, I logged back on to http://www.bnyonline.com/ , then I looked at www.outletpc.com then I looked at www.greenwichtime.com .  Then I started to run Weather Pulse, and my computer froze.  I tried rebooting, and it would not reboot.  I tried several times to no avail.  I finally did a System Restore from a Safe boot up, and it took longer for the System Restore than normally, and when the system rebooted, I did a Safe Boot again to complete the system restore.  I then booted normally, and the computer booted without any problems.  I tried Weather Pulse, and the program ran all right.  I can not figure out what the problem was, but over the last few months, I have had major system problems at this hour on Monday morning, so possibly it could be an early bird hacker causing the problem.  Whatever the case, I have notified Optimum Online that certain strange events are occurring occasionally, so I imagine if there is a hacker getting through my Norton Internet Security Firewall, they will notice the activity sooner or later.  I am not good enough at reading system logs to determine the problem myself.  The only other alternative would be that some person or persons are gaining physical access to my apartment and causing the problems on the computer, which would have other ramifications too in terms of invasion of privacy and private security.  Also it could be small bugs in Microsoft Windows XP SP2, but overall it seems fairly stable.  Since the system worked fine for a day, I do not think it is the newer Nvidia driver, but it could always be that too, since when I originally installed XP SP2 the newer Nvidia driver caused a problem.  Since it is suppose to be a nice day, I was thinking of going out early this morning for some fresh air, since I only got up at 7:30 P.M. last night.  I guess I will now shut down the computer, and I will go out for some early morning activity.  Since I have had additional expenses this month despite the fact that I did not have an automobile insurance payment or an electricity payment, I am still on a limited budget, so there is not that much I can do during the daytime besides sit and walk and observe.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/23/04  Monday 4:20 A.M.:  I checked my banking account at http://www.bnyonline.com/ , and I noticed a $4.99 charge on my checking account for a bank charge.  I called 1-800-CALLBNY, and I chatted with the bank representative.  The bank representative explained to me on my free checking account that the Internet Service is only available for free for the first two months.  After that there is a $4.99 charge for internet banking with online bill baying, but there is only a $1.99 internet banking charge, if one does not use online bill paying, which I don't.  I had them change my internet banking to the $1.99 charge a month with no internet bill paying.  I guess I am stuck with this month's $4.99 charge, since I must have missed something in the fine print of the free checking account offer with internet banking and Master Card debit card.  I guess I can afford the $1.99 charge a month charge for the convenience of internet banking.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/22/04  Sunday 8:55 A.M.:  I installed the latest NVIDIA driver 6.1.7.7 for my Mad Dog AGP Prowler 4X 64 meg. video card.  It seems to be working just fine.  Before installing the newer video driver, I had to uninstall the old NVIDIA driver.  I also had to disable Norton Antivirus 2004 while installing the new driver.  I then ran Norton Win Doctor 2003 on all but the first two tests.  I then ran it on the second test, but this time it froze on the first test.  Still the system is running just fine.  I set the NVIDIA driver to make the Sony FD Trinitron monitor appear a little bit more brilliant.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/22/04  Sunday 7:40 A.M.:  Apparently the Dell 21 inch M1110 color monitor cost $899 new in 1998, and today it sells refurbished for about a $100, so I go a good deal on the monitor.  I looked at this page http://support.ap.dell.com/docs/monitors/6981E/ , and I reset the Dell M1110 monitor to the factory defaults, which one can do by pressing switch 9 and 10 and power switch http://support.ap.dell.com/docs/monitors/6981E/controls_and_indicators.htm .  Of course after all of these years on computers, my eyesight is probably like Mr. McGoo.  However, for big bucks computer people, I found this web site http://www.lcdmonitors.philips.com/folder3/21-inch-lcd-monitor.html , so it shows our Dutch cousins with the tulip guilders have a fairly expensive product for the user market.  Of course, one would have to make sure if one were using a LCD monitor, one was using the right video card with DVI support.  This page has some information on the subject http://www.techbargains.com/video-products/product-reviews.cfm .  CIO

Note: <888> 08/22/04  Sunday 5:05 A.M.:  Greenwich Time, Steamboat Road Pier, Blue Fish story Greenwich Time - Blue fishing, a town summertime staple .  As I have told many of those blue fish regulars many times that I don't think the blue fishing on the end of the pier on Steamboat Road is that good compared to my experience in Nantucket.  The first time I tired blue fishing in Nantucket was the first week of October in 1978, when John Cooper a fellow dishwasher at the Languedoc restaurant and also a landscaper for Lou Grossman took me blue fishing.  He drove me out by the old U.S. Navy Quonset hut on the south shore of Nantucket at the end of Lyon Farm Road off the road from the Sconset rotary to Sconset, and during that two hours in the evening, I caught 78 blue fish and 2 stripped bass, sometimes two at a time.  I tried fishing a lot after that experience particularly during my first trip to California, and I never caught any fish out in California.  However, I suppose on remembering that first time blue fishing on Nantucket, and from seeing stories on Discovery channel, I could have been like one of those walruses on the rocks in Alaska, and I guess technically a killer whale or some other big fish could swim in the water with the blue fish and pull one right off the sandy south shores of Nantucket.  I cleaned the fish on the beach that day, and as I recall, I sold them to the Languedoc restaurant for .35 a pound fileted.  I used my profits to buy a two piece blank yellow fiberglass surfcasting rod that split in half, a Penn Reel, 50 pound test line, a yellow plastic tackle box, filet knief, farrells,Hopkins lures, and other fishing tackle items at the fish tackle store near the A&P parking lot. The Hopkins lures are what I used to catch the blue fish and stripers.  On the road trip to California later that month, while I was out there, I took the farrells off my surf casting rod, and I wrapped it with blue nylon thread which was the same nylon thread that I used to make my back pack from the Heminway thread company of Steamboat Road in Greenwich, Connecticut.  After I wrapped the entire surf rod with the nylon thread, and I wrapped the farrells on it with the same nylon thread, I primed it with lacquer primer and then I lacquered about five coats of lacquer on the rod waiting a day for it to dry between each coat and lightly sanding it with fine steel sand paper.  Unfortunately in the damp California surf air, the rod did not dry properly between lacquer coats, and after about a week the lacquer bubbled.  On my last trip to California, on election night in 1980 when Ronald Reagan looked like he was going to win the election, I was in Santa Barbara at the Montecito Inn witnessed by a local Greenwich lawyer.  I was out of funds, so I left the fishing rod, tackle box, and Penn reel at the Shell gasoline station on the coast highway as it went through Santa Barbara.  The attendant gave me $10 of gasoline, and I drove down to Laguna Beach for the victory party, and about five days later, I sold the 1973 two door Burgundy Volvo made in Belgium for about $1,250 at a cash for your car place in Anaheim, California near the entrance to Disney Land, and I flew back with a friend to New York.  That was the last time I was on the west coast or California.  I never had enough money or time to visit Disney Land in California.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/22/04  Sunday 3:00 A.M.:  I watched some television, but there is not much original programming this time of year, just reruns.  I ate 20 Townhouse crackers.  They tend to be a bit stale because living around the waterfront with lots of moisture, crackers get a bit damp.  I know of people whom live near the waterfront that keep crispers in their kitchens or pantries to keep their crackers dry.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/22/04  Sunday 1:30 A.M.:  I read the June 2004 issue of Country Living magazine from England while I was at the Greenwich Hospital dental clinic on Friday afternoon.  There was an article about energy problems in England.  Apparently the wind powered electricity generating wind mills only work about 25% of time and most of the United Kingdom's energy resources from coal are depleted.  Also the oil and gas from the north sea are running out fast and might not be available in the near future.  Most of England's energy needs are being met by natural gas from Russia and the former Russian republics, Iran, and Algeria.  The writer of the article mentioned that 80% of France's energy comes from nuclear energy, and more than likely some time in the near future England would have to turn to nuclear energy to meet its energy needs.  The article also mentioned that in 50 years of nuclear energy worldwide, less people had died from nuclear energy accidents than die in a single week from automobile wrecks on the roads in England.  I wonder how many people might actually die sooner for a lack of energy to stay warm during the colder months.  I read on the BBC last winter that 50,000 people in the United Kingdom die from the cold every winter.  It sort of makes one wander what the real world priorities are of the so call environmental groups whom seem to continue to pursue more energy per capita per person than most people in the western world consume in their ordinary work day life in the western world.  Of course in other areas of the world because of climate or a more rigorous lifestyles, they do not consume as much energy.  I mentioned when I was down on the waterfront this past evening that the last time I was in Toronto, Canada about 21 years ago, all of Toronto was full lit up at night, and there did not seem to be any lack of electricity because of the large amount of electricity available from the power generation plants at Niagara Falls.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/22/04  Sunday 12:55 A.M.:  I made and ate my usual salad www.geocities.com/mikelscott/salad.htm .  I used all of the regular ingredients except instead of tuna fish, I used a tin of sardines that I chopped.  For the cheddar cheese portion, I used Stop and Shop extra sharp cheddar cheese.  I ate the salad with a glass of iced tea.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/21/04  Saturday 11:40 P.M.:  I had a telephone call from a friend this morning about 7 A.M..  I slept until 6 P.M..  I ate breakfast of oatmeal, toast with strawberry jam, orange juice, vitamins, supplements, and coffee.  I went outside, and I chatted with a neighbor.  I gave the neighbor a  10 foot telephone extension cord that I left outside the neighbor's apartment door.  I then cleaned up, and I went downtown.  I went by the Exxon gasoline station next to the Greenwich Library, and I bought $7.30 of regular unleaded gasoline at $2.259 a gallon for about 30 miles per gallon usage.  I walked the entire length of Greenwich Avenue including the train station area, and I sat out at various locations.  I used the ATM machine at Putnam Trust Bank of New York on Greenwich Avenue.  I toured CVS and Scott toilet paper goes on sale tomorrow for $4.99 for a dozen rolls of a thousand sheets.  Scott toilet paper is not quilted like Charmin, but it works better in certain septic and sewer systems, since it does not clog as easy as the quilted variety which is more comfortable.  Also a liter bottle of CVS mouthwash will be $1.99.  I then completed my walk.  I next went down by the waterfront, and I chatted with some of the regular fishermen.  I then  went by the Stop and Shop, and I bought a 10 ounce bar of Stop and Shop New York extra sharp cheddar cheese for $2.50 and a 10 ounce bar of Stop and Shop Vermont extra sharp cheddar cheese for $2.50 plus a 10 ounce box of fresh mushrooms for $2.29 for $7.29 total.  I then returned home, and I drank some iced tea.  Before I went out, I moved the Scotch 3M paper binding kit in a box from the bedroom closet floor to the false ceiling above the bed in the bedroom.  I put the Sears blue and grey Kenmore upright vacuum cleaner in the bedroom closet with the three other vacuum cleaners, so it is now not in the way in the bathroom.  I brought up my straw hat from the car, and I put it on the brass hat and coat stand in front of the sweater closet in the hallway with my Greenwich Country Club golf hat, the smaller straw hat, and the Australian bush canvas hat.  I noticed while I was downtown that the public bus leaving from in front of the train station traveling east had a bicycle rack for two bicycles on the front of the bus, so perhaps in the future if more people use bicycles, they will want to install larger bicycle racks on the public buses.  Alas though, Connecticut is not as flat as the Netherlands, so people whom tend to ride bicycles have to be in better shape with all of the hills not to mention dealing with the traffic, since there are no bicycle lanes to speak of.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/21/04  Saturday 1:40 A.M.:  I will now shut down the computer.  I will eat a bowl of wheat crackers with iced tea.  I will then go to bed.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/21/04  Saturday 1:35 A.M.:  I ran the repair feature of Microsoft Office 2003.  I then ran the Office updates.  I installed one update for Contact Manager.  I then ran Norton Win Doctor without the first two Active X tests.  I then ran the second Active X test.  I then ran the first Active X test with the scanning features disabled.  I then ran the first Active X test with the scanning features enabled.  Thus Norton Win Doctor fixed all the problems without freezing.  I then did a System Restore backup.  I then ran Ad-aware SE personal.  I then ran CCleaner with the remove cookies feature disabled.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/21/04  Saturday 12:15 A.M.:  Of course if one were cleaning up after a hurricane www.geocities.com/mikelscott/weather.htm or a volcano http://www.geocities.com/mikelscott/volcanoe02.htm , I don't think a Sears Vacuum cleaner would help much, but http://www.allstate.com/ or www.geico.com might help, but as I recall after Hurricane Andrew, State Farm http://www.statefarm.com/ quit issuing new insurance policies in Florida, and I am not sure about Allstate or GEICO.  I once knew somebody from John Hancock insurance http://www.johnhancock.com/ in Florida, and I would imagine Aetna http://www.aetna.com/index.htm , Travelers http://www.stpaultravelers.com/ or https://www.travelerslife.com/ or Prudential www.prudential.com or General Reinsurance www.genre.com or eventually Lloyd's http://www.lloyds.com/ might be helpful. I once ran into somebody from Lloyds that claimed they lost a lot of money in Hurricane Andrew, but that is a different story, we will not dwell on at the present.  Of course the United States government does sell flood insurance too http://www.fema.gov/nfip/whonfip.shtm .  CIO

Note: <888> 08/20/04  Friday 11:45 P.M.:  I looked at this link Floor Care Accessories at sears.com , but their web site does not tell which parts items are for which model numbers which is a serious error on Sears' part, so more than likely they hope you will show up in the store and buy something you had not plan on buying.  I think in the business, they call that a loss leader.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/20/04  Friday 11:20 P.M.:  The Sears parts web site does not show any parts for the sale model yet including bags and belts, but I suppose that takes time, but more than likely bags and belts would be at the store.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/20/04  Friday 11:05 P.M.:  Of course the vacuum cleaner on sale is normally $40 more plus about $3 more tax, so I actually have saved about $90.  The unit I have is the same configuration as the one on sale, but it is blue and gray as opposed to green and gray.  It does not have the capability of using the extra filters including the Hepa filters which would be another $20 plus the tax, which I don't think the extra filters come with the sale unit but are available as additional items.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/20/04  Friday 10:55 P.M.:  Thus compared to the one on sale for $40 plus $9.50 shipping and about $2.50 tax, I have saved $52 minus $5 or about $47 by repairing the older Sears Upright Vacuum, which on my budget is quite a lot of money.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/20/04  Friday 10:45 P.M.:  Well basically since the Sear Upright vacuum cleaner that I got for free by our dumpster because it had a broken belt is like the one on sale but a couple of years older probably.  Thus it only cost me that $7.99 shipping and handling which includes the cost of shipping the bags too, $2.99 for each of the two belts, and one is a spare, and a spare light bulb for $2.99 and the vacuum bags for $10.99 plus $1.68 tax for $29.63 total, thus the actual cost of the Sear Upright Vacuum cleaner to me is only about $5 which is a fourth of the cost of the shipping and the cost of the belt to repair it, and of course I would need the bags and the spare parts in the future to continue to use it.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/20/04  Friday 10:35 P.M.:  I could have gone over to the new Sears at the Galleria in White Plains, New York to get the parts, but I figured it would have been about $4 in gasoline and wear and tear on the car to save the $8 shipping and handling, so I decided not to venture over there.  Plus by not going there, I do not have the temptation to spend money on other items.  Of course, I could have bought the new upright vacuum cleaner for $12 more tomorrow with tax there, but alas, I still would have had to buy the vacuum bags which would have been another $12 with tax, so by repairing the slightly used one, I have saved about $24 plus the gasoline and wear and tear on the car.  Also I imagine in August, it would be a bit warm driving in White Plains, New York, since my car does not have air conditioning.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/20/04  Friday 10:25 P.M.:  I just noticed that in the Sears www.sears.com circular starting tomorrow Sears.com Circular that the same vacuum Kenmore Upright Vacuum, Swing Green w/Dark Gray at sears.com is $10 cheaper starting tomorrow for $39.99 for half price.  I also figured out that one can have it shipped to Greenwich, Connecticut for $9.50 plus about $1.60 tax.  Thus if one is thinking about getting an upright vacuum cleaner, it is a good deal.  I paid for the parts I ordered nearly that much, but it included $8.00 shipping and handling, plus I ordered 8 vacuum bags for $11, so the repair parts were only $9 plus tax with the shipping and handling.  I chatted with two relatives, and I went outside briefly.  CIO

End of Scott's Notes week of 08/20/04:

Note: <888> 08/20/04  Friday 8:40 P.M.:  I dusted off the inside and outside of the Sears Kenmore upright vacuum cleaner.  I cleaned and reinstalled the foam sponge air filter inside the unit by running it underneath hot water and rinsing it out.  I will now send out my weekly notes.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/20/04  Friday 8:20 P.M.:  I had a little wooden folding chair which I had for soaking my feet in the bathtub with a Rubbermaid container from under the sink with Epsom salts which folding chair I had in the bathroom on the wall where the Sear Kenmore vacuum is now, so to make room I put the folding wooden chair underneath the far rear side of the blue sofa.  It is a tight fit, but it is easy to access, if one needs it.  I also use the folding wooden chair for changing smoke detector batteries and ceiling fixture lights and storing the Christmas decorations in the false ceiling in the living room.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/20/04  Friday 8:10 P.M.:  One of my neighbors discarded a broken Sears Kenmore upright vacuum today model number 116.39109991 similar to this unit Kenmore Upright Vacuum, Swing Green w/Dark Gray at sears.com .  I retrieved it from the dumpster area, and I inspected it.  It had a broken belt.  It also had a full vacuum bag.  I noticed the neighbor had bought a new vacuum at Sears, because they are on sale through today.  I decided to fix the unit.  I ordered from Sears online www.sears.com two belts part #4369591 for $2.99 each, a package of eight vacuum bags part #50688 for $10.99 and a bulb part #5240 for $2.99 plus $7.99 shipping and handling and $1.68 tax for $29.63 total.  I can track the order at http://www3.sears.com/orderstatus.html .  It may seem a little bit expensive to spend on a used vacuum, but the bags were more than one third, shipping and handling and tax were one third, and the other parts were less than one third.  I do not have room in my bedroom closet for it, so I placed it in the bathroom along the wall toward the toilet to have it handy.  I still have the old Hoover upright, the Electrolux with the hose and power nozzle, and the Electrolux with just the hose and metal tubes with brush attachment.  On the Sears Kenmore unit, I can wash the sponge air filter.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/20/04  Friday 6:00 P.M.:  I made and ate my usual salad www.geocities.com/mikelscott/salad.htm .  This time instead of using a can of tuna fish, I used a 4.25 ounce can of shredded crab meat.  For the cheddar cheese portion, I used Stop and Shop extra sharp cheese.  I did not use mushrooms, since I am out of mushrooms.  I had the salad with a glass of iced tea.  I will now go outside briefly to throw out some garbage and check the weather.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/20/04  Friday 4:45 P.M.:  I went outside, and I did my previous mentioned errands.  I picked up my mail.  Earlier today, I moved the brass coat rack from the bathroom entrance to in front of the hallway sweater closet.  I do not use the sweater closet much this time of the year, and I do not want to catch my toe on the brass pedestal of the brass coat rack.  During the colder days of the winter, when I wear my Rainforest down filled overcoat, I hang it on the brass coat rack to have it readily available.  However, currently it is 84 degrees Fahrenheit and feels like 92 degrees Fahrenheit http://www.w3.weather.com/weather/local/06830 . The NOAA weather radio just went off Weather Hazards for Northern Westchester County, NY .  CIO

Note: <888> 08/20/04  Friday 4:25 P.M.:  I went out after the last message, and I went by the Arnold Bread outlet.  I bought two 5.5 ounce boxes of Arnold seasoned regular cut croutons for .99 each and a loaf of Arnold stone ground wheat bread for $1.89 for $3.87 total.  I then drove down by the waterfront.  I next went by the Greenwich Hospital Thrift Shop.  Everything is still half price except those items marked not half price and clothes and linens are $20 a bag.  There is not too much merchandise left, but one never knows what one will find.  I then arrived at noon an hour early at the Greenwich Hospital dental clinic, and at 1 P.M., the dental hygienist started cleaning my teeth.  They were dirty, and it took about an hour, and they also took a full set of dental x-rays.  I then went back by the Greenwich Hospital Thrift Shop, and they had two 19 inch made in year 2000 Dell monitors for $20 each which at half price would be $10 each.  I bought a 20 inch Dell M1110 monitor for $20 not half price.  I used my cart that I keep in the hatchback area of my Hyundai to carry it to the car.  I then returned directly home, and I carried up the Dell monitor to my apartment.  I disconnected the CompUSA 19 inch monitor from the left side of my primary computer setup, and I connected the Dell 20 inch monitor with the existing cables, since the 20 inch Dell came with out cables.  It works just fine, and I now have two 20 inch CRT SVGA and UVGA monitors on my primary computer setup.  I have them both at the same level, and the Dell sits on books on the dining room table to raise it up to the same height as the Sony 20 inch monitor that is at the center position.  I have the Dell at about a 40 degree angle to the Sony monitor.  From the Dell backup computer in the living room, I put the Dell Trinitron monitor with the AMD backup computer in the bedroom.  I connected the 19 inch CompUSA monitor with a VGA cable that I had to the Dell backup computer in the living room.  The CompUSA 19 inch monitor is about five years old.  I bought it for about $429 plus tax at CompUSA in Norwalk.  Actually $279 of it was paid for by a friend as a Christmas gift that year.  I move the HP Ultra VGA 17 inch monitor from the AMD backup computer to on top of the Gateway 2000 backup computer, and I moved the Royal 17 inch monitor from the Gateway 2000 to on top of the right Dell monitor on the sideboard in the bedroom.  They are all connected up and running.  I now have the Royal monitor for the IBM Cyrix computer that I do not have set up, but although it is 233 Mhz, it only has 64 megs of memory, but it does work.  Maybe I should offer it to a thrift shop, but I am not sure they would want it.  I adjusted and degaussed the 20 inch Dell monitor.  Thus I have an even better primary computer setup.  I will now go out to put the cart back in my car, and I will throw out my old ink cartridges that I had saved.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/20/04  Friday 10:20 A.M.:  I will now shut down the computer, and I will clean up, and I will go out.  It is warmer today http://www.w3.weather.com/weather/local/06830 with a high of 87 degrees Fahrenheit expected.  I will eat a peanut butter sandwich with a glass of iced tea before cleaning up and going out.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/20/04  Friday 10:05 A.M.:  I woke up during the night, and I ate a couple bowls of wheat crackers.  I was awake at 7 A.M..  I had breakfast of oatmeal, toast with strawberry jam, orange juice, vitamins, supplements, and coffee.  I did my house cleaning and watering the plants.  I just threw out the garbage.  I have a 1 P.M. dental appointment today.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/19/04  Thursday 9:15 P.M.:  I watched a Travel channel television show about the Bahamas.  Of course, since I am not very good in the sun in anymore, and since I do not drink alcohol anymore, I guess that is not a travel getaway option for myself.  I once visited Paradise Island in the Bahamas around January 1978.  It was a pleasant few days escape from Florida where I was camping out at the time.  I guess, one would have to get use to the tropical lifestyle to enjoy the Bahamas.  At the moment, it is still not to cool yet in Greenwich, Connecticut, and it was actually a bit warm today.  I suppose in travel and tourism, it is what one is use to.  I will now shut down the computer, and I will go to bed, since I did not have much sleep today.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/18/04  Wednesday 6:05 A.M.:  I had a problem getting the Linksys 8 port hub working on the bedroom backup computers, but I finally disconnected all of the cables including the power cable, and I changed the multiple power adaptor plug to another similar one, and it would not work on 3 volts, and it is suppose to use 3.3 volts, but it works on 4.5 volts.  I am still in the process of configuring the left HP Kayak XA computer.  Today, I received a Bush Cheney 04 bumper sticker in the mail, and since I already have a W04 bumper sticker, I sent it to a relative in Kennebunkport, Maine http://www.geocities.com/mikelscott/137.htm .  I mailed it at the Valley drive post office, when I went out the first time this past evening.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/18/04  Wednesday 2:15 A.M.:  I took the second power strip that I had on the floor in front of the living room desk, and I used it to connect the cordless telephone wires, answering machine, and lamps on the maple table.  I put the white extension cord on the floor in the left living room closet.  I put the three prong adaptor and the three plug converter in the top left mahogany bureau drawer in the bedroom.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/18/04  Wednesday 1:55 A.M.:  There is another tropical storm front northeast of Brazil NRL Monterey Satellite Photos , so remember to keep www.geocities.com/mikelscott/weather.htm handy.  I put the two foot by four foot Saudi Arabian hospitality flag back up on the center hallway bookcase in case any oil sheiks down south decide to come back north to escape the tropical weather fronts.  I made up a fresh batch of homemade hummus www.geocities.com/mikelscott/hummus.htm .  I used two cloves of elephant garlic in it.  I made and ate my usual salad www.geocities.com/mikelscott/salad.htm .  Instead of tuna fish, I used a tin of sardines that I chopped.  For the cheddar cheese portion, I used Heluva A Good muenster cheese.  I used all of the other regular ingredients.  I had the salad with a glass of iced tea.  I will now finish configuring the left HP backup computer on the sideboard in the bedroom.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/18/04  Wednesday 12:15 A.M.:  I was up at 6 P.M. this evening.  I had breakfast of oatmeal, toast with strawberry jam, orange juice, vitamins, supplements, and coffee.  I went outside briefly, and I picked up the mail.  I showered and cleaned up, and I drove over to Radio Shack in Cos Cob, and I brought the receiver for my General Electric cordless 25 channel telephone that I bought about six years ago.  It had been in my bedroom desk drawer.  I bought a Radio Shack cordless telephone nickel-cadmium rechargeable battery  3.6 volts 350 mAh #23-197 for $11.49 and .69 tax for $12.18.  The salesman installed it for me.  I then returned home, and I connected the base unit for the General Electric 25 channel cordless telephone to the telephone slitter beneath maple side table at the end of the blue couch, and I used a AC power 3 plug adaptor and a 3 pole to 2 pole adaptor to plug in the power supply to the existing extension cord with the General Electric answering machine and the Uniden cordless phone.  I put the receiver in the cradle to charge the battery.  I still had the AT&T corded phone at that location too.  I then went out, and I walked the entire length of Greenwich Avenue, and I sat out at various locations.  I used the bathroom twice at Starbucks.  I then drove down by the waterfront.  I next went by the ATM machine at Putnam Trust Bank of New York on Mason Street.  I then drove over to CVS at the Riverside Shopping center, and I bought a Southwestern Bell inline coupler to connect two telephone lines together for $2.99 plus .18 tax for $3.17 total.  I then returned back to central Greenwich, and I drove down Greenwich Avenue again.  I then returned home.  I have several spare 10 foot telephone cords in my top left living room desk drawer, so I took one, and I used a spare telephone line splitter, and I connected it underneath the Queen Anne chair to the existing tree of telephone line splitters that come off a cable from my bedroom wall and connect my living room telephones and modems.  I then connected the AT&T corded telephone from the maple side table, with the inline coupler, and I placed the AT&T telephone on the far right side of the mahogany bureau next to the French reproduction sitting chair for easy well lit telephone conversation at a convenient location.  I moved the Revere bowls to the center of the Danish bar, and I moved the display case with family picture and Greek parthenon silver plate box to the left side of the mahogany bureau.  I put the Nantucket ashtray on the small brass and glass end table on the entry side of the blue sofa, and I put the Netherlands Club of New York trivet on the other small brass and glass side table beneath the Danish bar.  The General Electric 25 channel cordless telephone is partially charged, and it works just fine.  I now have seven corded telephones and four cordless telephones in the apartment, and they all work.  I also have the Net2Phone program on my computer with the cable modem for talking domestically for 2 cents a minute.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/17/04  Tuesday 10:45 A.M.:  Well, the system seems to be running fine again.  I can not figure out if it is system incompatibilities, buggy hardware, or some sort of hacker or intrusion.  However, since I have excellent firewall protection, I doubt if it is a hacker or intruder, since there would be no logical reason for someone to waste their time bothering me, since there are a lot more lucrative targets.  Since the system seems to run flawlessly most of time, I tend to think that is not the problem.  Possibly it is just that my 20 month old hardware is not as compatible with the newer system.  Anyway on my budget, I will have to live with it as is, and it seems fine for now.  The virus might have come on the DVD software disk, and the new Norton AntiVirus 2004 update detected it.  There does not seem to be any system damage from the deleted virus.  The fact that ActiveX can lead to problems, my only option would be to restore the Internet Explorer settings to Default, but I have not changed them unless some other program changed them.  I am tired, so I will now shut down the computer, and I will go to bed.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/17/04  Tuesday 10:10 A.M.:  I restored my Microsoft Money 2002 backup file which was three days old, and I updated the most recent entries, and the Microsoft Money 2002 backup to floppy disk now works.  I went outside before I did that.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/17/04  Tuesday 9:20 A.M.: I ran Symantec Security Check .  I passed the test perfectly.  The test installed another ActiveX control.  I then ran Norton WinDoctor 2003 by running all but the first two tests, then the second test, and then the first test, and it fixed all of the problems.  However, if one tries to run all of the tests at the same time, the system freezes.  The test alerted Norton AntiVirus 2004 that I had the "Hope.860" virus in my Power DVD "updateipr.exe" file, but when I scanned with Norton AntiVirus 2004, it did not find it.  I uninstalled Power DVD which is the DVD program that came with the DVD drive, since I do not use it.  I then ran Ad-aware 6.0, but the system froze on the cookies scan, so I deleted my cookies, and I ran Ad-ware 6.0 and it did a complete scan without finding any problems.  Possibly the problem that I have had with the Norton Win Doctor 2003 and Norton AntiVirus 2004 might be caused by the fact that I have UDMA enabled on my IDE 1 controller in the device manager.  Still, the system seems be running fine without any problems.  I guess basically one can check out the system indefinitely, but one of these days, I will have to get back to reading the tech news, however during the vacation time, there is really not that much tech news at the moment.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/17/04  Tuesday 7:20 A.M.:  I tried doing a Norton Win Doctor 2003 scan, and the first option Windows Registry Active X agents caused my system to crash, so I disabled the first option.  It has worked before, so possibly the recent Symantec update caused it to crash.  The alarm bell went off at 6:55 A.M., but it was reset shortly there after.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/17/04  Tuesday 6:35 A.M.:  I ran the Symantec Update, and the Norton Internet Security 2004 firewall was updated.  However, it recommended and turned off the Windows XP firewall, so possibly when I had the XP firewall enabled, it might have disabled the Norton firewall.  I will leave it with the Norton firewall enabled which is the recommended settings by Norton Internet Security 2004.  Possibly, one can only have one firewall enabled.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/17/04  Tuesday 5:10 A.M.:  I had a technical problem after the last message.  I entered my $5 donation to the American Red Cross disaster relief fund in my Microsoft Money 2002 program, and when I was closing it, it went to save the backup file to floppy disks which it does once a week.  While it was saving it to the first of five floppy disks since it is a large file, the system froze.  When I rebooted the computer, it would not start.  I tried booting it a few more times to no avail. The system however would boot in Safe Mode, so I did a system restore to two days ago.  When I booted after the system restore, the computer would not boot, so I booted to Safe Mode again, and the system booted in Safe Mode and completed the System restore process.  I then booted the computer regularly with the cable modem turned off without any problems.  I tried closing the Microsoft Money 2002 program again, and it froze at saving it to the first floppy disk again.  I went through the same procedure again to get the computer going again.  I noticed my router lights were blinking steadily, so I call Optimum Online tech support at 1-203-348-9211.  However, I remembered that the Siemens router blinks constantly when the three networks are bridged together, so I determined that I did not have a DNS attack going on.  I chatted with the tech support representative about what I had been doing for the last month and a half.  He said I would probably have a more reliable system if I did not use the USB networks, but I explained that for now it worked just fine.  I could always take out the USB card and install the network card again, but I think it is less drain on the motherboard resources having the USB card than using the motherboard USB ports.  The system is running fine, but I have not gotten much work done tonight at all.  I turned off the weekly backup to floppy disks option in the Microsoft Money 2002 program.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/15/04  Sunday 11:35 P.M.:  I went out after the last message.  I went by CVS on Greenwich Avenue, and I picked up a prescription.  I also bought buy one get one free or two boxes of CVS thirty bags of 13 gallon kitchen plastic garbage bags for $3.69 plus .22 tax for $3.91 total.  I then drove down by the waterfront.  I next drove over to Staples in Old Greenwich, and I bought a box of 100 slim CD jewel cases 50 clear and 50 translucent for $12.44 and two packages of 50 TDK CD/R disks for $9.94 a package plus $1.94 tax for $34.26 total.  I then went out to Tod's Point.  I drove around the point, and I parked at the southeast parking area.  I chatted with a resident.  The resident's car battery had run down, so I jump started it with cables that I have in the back of my Hyundai.  I had to pull close to the other car for the cables to reach.  I have a Slaymaker jump start system in my apartment, but I do not keep it in the car because it gets too hot and cold in the car depending on the season.  I noticed on the positive poll on my Sears battery that the connector was lose, so I used a wrench that I keep in the back of my car, and I loosened it, and I pushed it down all the way, and I tightened it securely.  I also checked the negative terminal.  I can not imagine why it was lose, but I suppose it has been that way for some time.  I then chatted with another visitor.  I next drove back to downtown Greenwich, and I walked the entire length of Greenwich Avenue, and I sat out at various locations.  I used the bathroom at Starbucks.  I next drove down by the waterfront.  I then returned home.  I put the two TDK CD/R bundles on the floor to the rear and right of the computer.  I put the box of CD jewel cases on the left living room closet floor.  I made and ate my usual salad www.geocities.com/mikelscott/salad.htm .  I used all of the regular ingredients except, instead of tuna fish, I used a 6 ounce can of flaked crab that I rinsed and drained, and for the cheddar cheese portion, I used Heluva A Good Muenster cheese.  I had the salad with a glass of iced tea.  I keep my spare plastic garbage bags above the stove.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/15/04  Sunday 2:50 A.M.:  I went through my email earlier.  Basically from what I know not much is happening locally, since during this time of year people tend to be on vacation.  Still, since we are near a major metropolitan area, there tends to be people in this area most of the time.  Of course a lot of people from the neighboring communities work here, so they tend to keep an eye on the place, when some of the locals are busy with other matters.  From what I know from studying and observing the weather locally this past summer, it looks like it might be a colder winter, so more than likely those areas to the north of us will be even colder this winter.  Generally in this area when we have colder winters, the people from the warmer countries tend to go back down south, and we tend to get people from the areas north of us living here during the winter.  In other words, there tends to be a lot of French speaking Canadians whom seem to work their way down here treating this area like a spring day during the winter.  Whatever, the case we will have to wait and see to see how the winter develops.  However, for those people whom like to plan their budgets ahead, more than likely they will be spending more money on heating utility bills than in past winters.  Since I tend to acclimated to the colder temperatures of this area already, more than likely my upcoming heating electricity bills for this upcoming winter will probably tend to be the same as in past winters.  One energy saving tip, is one can go to Models sporting goods at the Port Chester, New York shopping center, and four about $8 top or bottom one can buy cotton sweat pants of tops which tend to be warmer for lounging around one's home in the winter, so one does not need to keep the thermostat as high.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/15/04  Sunday 2:25 A.M.:  This page Belgium Population and CIA - The World Factbook -- Belgium says the Netherlands has a higher population than Belgium, so I guess with all of the over crowding in Belgium, some of the Belgium population has moved to the Netherlands CIA - The World Factbook -- Netherlands to make it the highest population density in Europe.  Basically one could figure it out oneself by dividing the number of square miles or kilometers into the population of the country.  Both of them are on the north sea, so they might also have a lot of bog people whom tend not to mingle to well with their urban cousins and might not be counted.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/15/04  Sunday 2:00 A.M.:  The country with the highest population density in the world is the country of Belgium.  Although, it is only about the size of Fairfield County, Connecticut, this person must be surrounded by a lot of people Albert II of Belgium - encyclopedia article about Albert II of Belgium. Free access, no registration needed. What does Albert II of Belgium mean? What is Albert II of Belgium? Provided by the Free Online Encyclopedia. .  Of all the European monarchies the Belgium Royal family is suppose to be the most old world and staid of the group.  Since it is not a very large country, the Belgium people are not use to traveling very much, since they risk leaving their country if they travel too far in any direction.  However, they tend to be cousins of both the French and Dutch which I also am, so I feel comfortable around the Belgium people, but I do not speak Flemish or Dutch, but I have studied four years of French.  My father lived a good deal of his working career in Belgium, so I know a little bit about it.  Also since my mother is Holland Dutch American, she also knows something about the area.  Whatever, the case Belgium is also suppose to have fine dining.  I suppose since Belgium was once part of Flanders before it sank under water 50,000 years ago, some of the Flemish still are in Belgium, and since the Ghost of Flanders has appeared in this apartment, I call my Greenwich Housing Authority public housing building at 71 Vinci Drive, "Flanders's Farm" , since possibly the Flemish when their country sank under water 50,000 years ago might have sailed away and established colonies elsewhere.  I call the pier on the end of Steamboat Road Flanders Pier.  Thus since more than likely there are other Flemish people around the waterfronts around the world, they like to keep in touch about Flemish life in various other parts of the world.  However, since I do not know Flemish or Dutch, I would have only have spoken to Belgium people that I have met in English or poorly spoken French.  The Belgium royal family are not known for very much, other than the fact that Queen Victoria's husband Prince Albert was King Leopold of Belgium's nephew, so King Leopold helped finance his nephew's family, and so they became more prominent in the English language.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/14/04  Saturday 11:15 P.M.:  I went out after the last message, and I went by the Greenwich Library.  I chatted with another local library user for a while.  We walked across the street to Kinko's twice.  The other library user reported that he was walking at the top of Greenwich Avenue on Thursday when a man hole exploded, and I told the other library user that on previous occasions it was just squirrels or rats gnawing on the cables.  When we departed company, I noticed that the reason the subject matter came up, was that there was another man hole explosion on East Elm Street across from the Greenwich Time he must have seen before he started talking to me, and the electric company had their trucks there to fix the problem.  Since it was about to rain anyway, and I did not know if there were any other problems downtown, I did not walk Greenwich Avenue, and I did drive down by the waterfront.  I then returned home.  I made and ate my usual salad www.geocities.com/mikelscott/salad.htm .  I used a tin of chopped sardines instead of tuna fish.  For the cheddar cheese portion, I use Heluva A Good Muenster cheese.  I used all of the other regular ingredients.  I had the salad with a glass of iced tea.  I relaxed a bit.  I went outside, and I chatted with a neighbor.  I chatted with a relative.  I am working on my email.  I ate a bowl of peanuts with some iced tea.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/14/04  Saturday 3:25 P.M.:  I moved the Lindbergh radio to the right side of the mahogany bureau in the bedroom, and I put it on the green leather box.  I moved the metal file folder holder from the right monitor on the bedroom side board to the left side of the mahogany bureau.  I removed the spare Seneca cigarettes from their box, and I put them on the bedroom closet shelf on the right side.  I collapsed the box, and I put it underneath the bed.  Thus the two monitors on the side board in the bedroom connected to the HP backup computers do not have anything on top of them, so they are ready for use.  I also have two LAN cables connected to each of the living room and the bedroom hubs, so one could use laptop computers off of them, and I also have all of the other spare cables underneath the living desk.  I ate a peanut butter sandwich a glass of iced tea.  I will now shut down the computer, and I will clean up, and I will go out.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/13/04  Friday 6:25 P.M.:  I finished the house cleaning and watering the plants.  I put a little liquid plant fertilizer in the plant water.  The TEAC DVD player would not work, which it does not, if there is weight on the top of it.  I took off the family picture off of it, and I hung it to the left of the left sconce.  I move the picture that was there to beneath the right sconce beneath the picture of Abraham Lincoln.  Beside my normal house keeping routine, I also vacuumed the furniture.  I was able to reset the TEAC DVD player by unplugging its plug, and it now works.  I put new AA Energizer batteries in the TEAC remote control, and I left the TEAC remote control unit on top of the TEAC DVD player.  I threw out the garbage.  It is beginning to rain.  I will now go out to do some errands.  I will shut down the computer.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/13/04  Friday 3:50 P.M.:  I moved the book on antique cars to the center hallway bookcase.  I moved the 4 inch magnifying reading glass to the right bookcase in the hallway.  I move the two wooden remote control holders to the window shelf to the right of the plants.  I put the two brass candle holders with white candles and the two 15 inch tall hurricane globes on the brass and glass coffee table.  I do not have anything on the two smaller brass and glass coffee tables.  I microwaved and ate a 13.25 ounce Stouffer's Lean Cuisine chicken Florentine meal, which I ate with a glass of iced tea.  I move the blue sofa and maple side table a little further away from the entrance area, so the entrance area is more spacious.  I will now do my house cleaning and watering the plants.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/13/04  Friday 3:00 P.M.:  I finished moving the furniture around.  It all looks a lot better.  I have a lot of extra pillows stacked on the bed in the bedroom, some of which I might get rid of in the near future.  I put the linens from the day bed in plastic bags in the false ceiling above the bed in the bedroom.  I have the two wool throws underneath the end of the bed in the bedroom.  I also put the damask comforter in the false ceiling.  I have the AMD backup computer sitting on the Danish desk in the bedroom hooked up.  I had to move the ceiling tile with the smoke detector in the living room closer to the kitchen, since it was above a lamp fixture that caused it to go off.  I threw out the old Dupont Orlon throw rug that I replaced with the larger antique rug.  On the wall where the day bed was, I have the Danish bar from the left, the long mahogany bureau, and the French sitting chair.  I put the magazine rack with the periodical literature at the bedroom door entrance.  I put the oak folding tables where the square table was in the bathroom on the left wall as one enters.  I went outside for breaks a few times.  I received the General Electric Service contract on my General Electric Profile 15,500 BTU air conditioner with remote control good until September 12, 2005.  I paid it a week or so ago.  The living room is a lot more spacious looking and more comfortable.  I have the two couches about five feet apart across from each other with the antique rug on the floor between them with the two foot by four foot brass and glass coffee table set up in between the two couches.  I still have the maple side table against the near end of the blue couch with the telephone equipment and lights and the other same items on it.  I have about 30 inches between the back of the blue couch and the living room closets.  I have one of the small brass and glass coffee tables at the near end of the blue couch and the other one in front of the Danish bar.  One can enter the sitting area from either end of the blue couch.  The overall effect is much more pleasing.  My steel folder holder is on top of the right monitor on the side board in the bedroom.  I put the cups with the pens on the lower shelf of the left bookcase in the hallway.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/13/04  Friday 10:30 A.M.:  My relatives arrived at 9:30 A.M. to pick up the day bed.  We took the day bed apart.  They decided not to take the box spring and mattress, so we discarded them by the dumpster outside.  They took the day bed frame apart and put it inside their car, so they don't have to carry the box spring and mattress on the roof.  I also gave them the pine square table at the bathroom entrance.  The items are for another relative's house in Kennebunkport, Maine http://www.geocities.com/mikelscott/137.htm .  They left at 10:20 A.M. to get a coffee downtown, and then they are back on the highway ahead of the rain.  I will now rearrange the furniture putting long mahogany bureau on the wall where the day bed was with the Danish bar and separate the two sofas further apart and put an antique rug I have on the floor in between them with the brass and glass coffee table from on top of the bedroom desk in between them with the two smaller brass and glass end tables on either end of the blue sofa.  I have a lot of day bed linens and spreads and mattress pads to store away.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/12/04  Thursday 6:30 P.M.:  I went out after the last message.  I went by the Arnold bread outlet, and I bought two 5.5 ounce regular cut Arnold garlic and cheese croutons for .99 each and a loaf of Arnold Oat bran bread for $1.45 for $3.43 total.  I then went by the Mercedes Benz dealership on West Putnam Avenue, but they do not have anyone whom uses Windows XP in German there.  I then drove down by the waterfront.  I next went by the Greenwich Library, and I read the Greenwich Time and P.C. Note: <888> 08/12/04  Thursday 2:15 P.M.:  I was up at 10 A.M..  I chatted with a relative.  The two relatives are not sure whether they will be coming by tomorrow morning to pick up the day bed or not.  It depends on the weather, and they will call me tomorrow morning.  If they do pick it up, they are going to put the box spring and mattress on the car roof and cover it with heavy plastic sheeting, but if it is raining, they might delay their trip until Saturday morning.  I had breakfast of oatmeal, toast with strawberry jam, orange juice, vitamins, supplements, and coffee.  I had the package from http://xtremetoner.com/ with my two Epson StylusColor 880 color and two black ink cartridges which came in about two days priority mail from the west coast.  I put the new ink cartridges, on the top shelf of the wicker rack behind the 19 inch left monitor above the old used ink cartridges on the lower shelf.  The four port USB 2.0 PCI card also arrived from http://www.pcimicro.com/ .  I went outside, and I checked my mail.  I got another copy of Horse Illustrated magazine.  I took out the two port USB 1.0 card from the computer, and I installed the four port USB 2.0 PCI card.  I plugged the D-Link 3 USB port device with LAN, the Sony monitor 4 port USB hub, and the two four port USB hubs into the USB 2.0 ports on the rear of the computer.  When I booted and after some tweaking all of the devices were recognized and the drivers for my USB devices were installed, and they all are working just fine.  I still have the cable modem install the same way with one USB cable from the D-Link USB hub to the cable modem USB port, one LAN cable from the D-Link LAN to the Siemens router, and one LAN cable from the onboard LAN to the Siemens routers, and I have all three LANs bridged with firewalls enabled.  I do not know whether USB 2.0 devices will play through my HUBs or not, since they are not USB 2.0 hubs, but maybe that does not matter.  I am currently getting 3607.4 kbps from CNET Bandwidth Meter Speed Test - Bandwidth Test .  CIO

Note: <888> 08/12/04  Thursday 2:40 A.M.:  On http://www.liveduvalstreet.com/ , I saw an old friend of mine who is still down in Key West, Florida.  I guess he moved out of Malibu, California.  I think he should look at www.geocities.com/mikelscott/weather.htm , but he has weathered worse storms.  I finished configuring the HP Vectra XU 6200 backup computer.  I have the HP Kayak XA backup computer back up and running, but I still have to configure it.  I connected two LAN cables to it, since it has two LAN connections.  I thus have five backup computers capable of running, and one slower IBM Cyrix in reserve not connected besides the primary computer.  I never really use the backup computers, and I have mostly used them for beta testing.  However, in an emergency they would be able to be used if there was electricity and cable modem working here.  I shut down the two HP backup computers. For an overall view of the Atlantic Ocean try NRL Monterey Satellite Photos .  I will now shut down the primary computer, and I will go to bed.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/10/04  Tuesday 10:05 P.M.:  I made and ate my usual salad www.geocities.com/mikelscott/salad.htm .  Instead of tuna fish, I used a tin of sardines that I chopped.  For the cheddar cheese portion, I used Heluva A Good Muenster cheese.  I used all of the other regular ingredients.  I had the salad with a glass of iced tea.  If any computer people have not figured it out, many of the people whom produce software code for programs like Windows XP are not volunteers, and they contract out for certain job assignments based on their experience and what their employers are willing to pay.  Once the project is complete and released to distribution, they tend to go back to their homes until the next project comes around and is completed.  I still have a Texas Longhorn steer horn in my apartment that was made as into an ashtray, and now that Microsoft Windows XP SP2 is completed, Windows Longhorn http://www.microsoft.com/windows/longhorn/default.mspx is still under development and not scheduled for release until early in 2006, so I guess once its beta is available and if I have the time and resources to test it, and if Microsoft lets me beta test it, I will be working on it, but I would imagine we will not see the beta probably until this winter at the earliest.  I suppose it would run on my primary computer, but I do not think I would want to use it for an early beta.  Basically I did not do a lot of beta testing on XP SP2 except install the different betas and then uninstall them, until I had to recreate my entire system starting July 1, 2004, when XP SP2 RC2 totally crashed my system.  However, since it was a fairly fresh install on my system, the final release of XP SP2 installed almost flawlessly.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/10/04  Tuesday 8:25 P.M.:  I took the three canvas blue and white ground level beach chairs out of the false ceiling in the bedroom, and I put them on the back seat of my Hyundai behind the driver's seat. I now have those three canvas beach chairs, two long stretch plastic beach chairs in the back hatch back area of the Hyundai and the black and wooden canvas director's chair in the car.  However, with the beach chairs, there is only room for three people in the car, but if I ever needed to transport 4 or 5 smaller people all together, I could put the three canvas beach chairs back in the apartment, and once the cold weather comes, I will put them back in the false ceiling in the bedroom.  I chatted with a neighbor.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/10/04  Tuesday 6:50 P.M.:  I put the Styrofoam packing peanuts and other packing material in the bag in the false ceiling above the bed in the bedroom.  I also have three canvas blue and white ground level beach chairs up there, about eight humidifiers, about a dozen stuffed pillows, my Minolta laser printer box, and Northgate computer shipping box.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/10/04  Tuesday 6:40 P.M.:  I ran the Symantec Live Update program.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/10/04  Tuesday 6:10 P.M.:  I went outside briefly to throw out the box.  Since I live on a limited income, I keep a lot of spare items around the apartment that might come in handy at some future date.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/10/04  Tuesday 5:50 P.M.:  I had about eight computer parts shipping boxes and cigarette box shipping boxes, that I broke down by removing the tape on the bottoms, and I collapsed them, and I stored them underneath the bedroom bed.  I put the shipping foam peanuts and other shipping bubble wrap in a bag in my bedroom window.  I put the box with computer parts and the DVD/CD drive box and the old broken CD drive in the box on the speaker to the left in the bedroom window.  To make room for the broken down boxes, I will throw out the Pure N Simple water filtration box and its literature, but I will save its videotape on my stereo bookshelf rack with other tapes and the faucet connector parts, I put on the floor in the hallway sweater closet.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/10/04  Tuesday 5:25 P.M.:  I changed the three calendars in the apartment from July 2004 to August 2004.  I have a Welbilt bread machine, Krups steamer, Italian pasta machine with parts, and Hamilton Beach juicer on the floor of the left living room closet along with all of the other kitchen items in the apartment.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/10/04  Tuesday 5:15 P.M.:  Blenders come in handy, since one can use them to make cold frosty drinks in the summer or if one is very careful not to overfill them, so the lid comes off hot soups in the winter.  One can also use them to make baby food or food for older people whom do not have many teeth.  I also have a Cuisine Art food processor in the kitchen with blades in the cabinet above and a spare Cuisine Art food processor in the bedroom closet.  I had a bag of ice cubes in the refrigerator that were about a year old, so I threw out that ice, and I put in ice from the ice trays that is about eight months old, and I put in fresh water in the eight ice trays in the freezer.  I also have a small Rubbermaid container in the ice bag in the freezer in my refrigerator that has a sample culture of the penicillin mold that I found growing in my refrigerator about eight months ago that I reported on at that time.  I have kept it frozen in the ice bag since then.  Basically in my volunteer computer operation, I pretty much do everything myself in the apartment, but a large group of town employees still maintain the building and the surrounding environment and we have an experience group of volunteers.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/10/04  Tuesday 4:45 P.M.:  I chatted with another relative.  Earlier, when I chatted with another relative, they mentioned that another relative visiting that relative was making a milk shake and the blender malfunctioned, and the contents went over the kitchen.  That relative wanted to know if I had a blender to send up with the day bed, and I do.  However that relative mentioned that the relatives moving the day bed were planning to put the box spring and mattress on the roof of the car, which I do not think is safe.  When I was driving up to Kennebunkport, Maine at the end of June, I saw a car with a box spring and mattress on the roof, and the front end of the mattress was blowing up in the air four feet like an air foil, which I do not think is a very safe driving condition, since it changes the aerodynamics of the vehicle, not to mention if the box spring and the mattress came off the roof, it would be a very unsafe hazard on the highway.  I advised against bringing up the day bed box spring and mattress on the roof of the car when I chatted with the other relative.  The other relative said they would call me back.  I have about a 20 year old Hamilton Beach 14 speed Instablend blender, which I just cleaned up, and I put on the kitchen counter, so the relatives if they do come through could take that up too.  I also cleaned the Braun hand mixer which I have on the right wall shelf.  The Greenwich Hardware store has two Braun blenders on the 70% off shelf.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/10/04  Tuesday 3:30 P.M.:  I was up at 1 P.M..  I went outside, and I picked up the mail.  I had breakfast of oatmeal, toast with strawberry jam, orange juice, vitamins, supplements, and coffee.  I chatted with a relative.  I went back outside briefly.  Two of the sofas in the community room have disappeared, perhaps they are being reupholstered.  I have seen lots of people in the area this summer as usual from down south including many people from the wealthier areas of Florida.  I have also seen various other groups of people whom travel through this area in the summer including the usual cross section of gypsies that seem to like to frequent the wealthier areas.  In the computer software business, since Microsoft is releasing the Windows XP SP2 update for free in the next couple of weeks, there would seem there would be no rush by the software pirates to dry to distribute it illegally.  However, since over 50,000 people beta tested Windows XP SP2, it would be widely in distribution.  However, since it does incorporate software protection features against pirated versions of the software, more than likely any hackers or software pirates whom were not beta testers might try to obtain the final release, since they would want to try to crack the software protection features, so they could update their pirated software.  I am volunteering helping Microsoft out, since they gave me a free copy of Microsoft Office 2003 when I attended the TS/2 Security conference at the Holiday Inn in Bridgeport, Connecticut this past February.  Basically, I have beta tested Windows XP SP2 since December 2003, and possibly Microsoft might give me a free full version copy of the final released product.  If not, I still have my own copy of Windows XP Professional upgrade that I paid $200 plus tax for at CompUSA in Norwalk, Connecticut in December 2002, and I received a $50 mail in rebate from Microsoft for attending a Windows XP conference at the Stamford Marriott before I bought the product.  Since IBM uses 400,000 licensed copies of Windows XP in their worldwide operations, I would be a little hesitant at calling IBM's personnel software pirates, but I suppose to many of the naive non computer users, it might seem that way.  However, since I am half Holland Dutch, and since the Dutch with Philips developed CD technology, and since the Dutch are cleaver in that technology, more than likely some of my Dutch cousins and their associates have tried to copy copywrited music and computer software with CD technology probably along with videos.  However, since I spend most of my time trying to work on the software systems part of the computer and reading technology reports, I have a feeling that some of the local beer boys whom may or may not have computers seem to think they know more about computers than they actually do.  Basically the computer people in this area know the key players, and just because somebody works as a trucker, janitor, grounds keeper or food service employee in a technology company in this area or another area, it does not mean that individual knows what the real technology people know about the business and who is whom.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/10/04  Tuesday 4:40 A.M.:  I went out after the last message.  I drove over to King Street in Port Chester, New York, and I drove up to IBM in Armonk, New York.  When driving in back country at night one has to drive slowly and keep a keen eye out for deer of the Bambi type, since they frequently jump out in front of cars.  This trip I did not see any deer.  I delivered the Microsoft Windows XP SP2 RTM Japanese version to the IBM Security personnel working there at night at about 3 A.M. EDT.  I then returned to central Greenwich via King Street and Glenville Road.  I chatted with a town employee downtown.  I drove down by the waterfront.  I then went by the ATM machine at Putnam Trust Bank of New York on Mason Street, and I used the ATM machine.  I just now returned home, and I drank some iced tea.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/10/04  Tuesday 2:15 A.M.:  I finished the download of Microsoft Windows XP SP2 RTM Japanese Version.  I made three CD copies and put them in jewel cases and labeled them.  I will now make like the pizza delivery man and deliver one copy to the security gate up at IBM Armonk, New York.  I am sure they would rather have a Planet Pizza from Greenwich, Connecticut, but maybe they will get use to eating rice.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/10/04  Tuesday 1:30 A.M.:  IBM tells users not to install Windows XP update , IBM goes slow on XP update - News - ZDNet , SP2's new firewall: Better than nothing, but not good enough - News - ZDNet .  I am 60% through downloading.  Technically, since I am a Microsoft OEM and a beta tester, I guess I am allowed to release the final release of XP SP2 to interested parties, but usually I let the younger professionals do that.  However, we are in a unique situation, since a lot of the reps are on vacation right now, and I am probably the only one in the area in proximity.  I have been up since 6 A.M. yesterday in the morning, but if it is important, after I copy the Japanese download of XP SP2 to CD, I could technically make it five miles back to IBM Armonk to deliver it.  However that is a dangerous road at night when one is tired, and I would rather not drive it tonight.  If one thinks it is really important, they could have the decency to give me a telephone call to let me know.  However, if they can not afford the fifty cents for a local pay phone or if they do not have a telephone of some sort, I would doubt that they are the truly interested parties, since the interested parties are not afraid to communicate.  My experience with the final release of Windows XP SP2 so far is that it is very stable and increased my computer performance by about 25 percent and since I mostly use Microsoft products I have no problems with it.  However, IBM is a major player in this area, and I have been over there many times.  Also since the Japanese community are workaholics and since they are probably not on vacation and since they are probably the largest venture capitalists in this area during the last 20 years having done things like buy several trillion dollars of United States government debt during the last 20 years, I suppose I could go out of my way to get it over to Armonk.  My local Japanese contact more than likely is not available.  However, my insurance man at GEICO www.geico.com would probably prefer me not to be driving when I am extremely tired.  Don't forget www.geocities.com/mikelscott/weather.htm and NRL Monterey Satellite Photos . CIO

Note: <888> 08/10/04  Tuesday 12:25 A.M.:  I am now downloading the Japanese version of Windows XP SP2 final release, which takes a while because Microsoft's beta download server only goes at 56 KBS.  You don't suppose it is all coming out of someone's home telephone line.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/10/04  Tuesday 12:20 A.M.:  I put away the iced tea in the refrigerator.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/09/04  Monday 11:45 P.M.:  I had something funny happen today when I was driving up King Street to IBM.  A pickup truck passed going the other way around Anderson Hill Road, and a large amount of paper items flew out of the back of the pick up truck.  While I drove up to IBM, I heard a scraping noise, which I thought might be a car problem.  The security guard at the gate at IBM did not say anything, but when I was walking out of Putnam Trust Bank of New York on Mason Street after I returned to Greenwich, I noticed about a three foot by two foot piece of white quilted type packing material stuck underneath my left front wheel housing which was causing the car to make a little bit extra noise until I removed it, when I discovered it.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/09/04  Monday 11:05 P.M.:  I bought my Epson StylusColor 880 color printer the day before 09/11/2001 http://911digitalarchive.org/   , so it sort of has sentimental value to me.  I recall it was a $149 printer on sale at Staples in Old Greenwich, Connecticut for $79.99.  I also recall going back to Staples the week after 911, and they gave me an additional $10 off under their price protection policy, since it was for sale $10 cheaper.  I have used it for my inkjet printing ever since.  The current Epson made color and black ink cartridges which are half full were obtained from Entree computer, when they exchanged Epson 800 color and black ink cartridges that I had mistakenly obtained from Marx Brother's going out business sale for half price.  I just now ordered from http://xtremetoner.com/ for the EpsonStylus Color 880 printer two black #T019201 ink cartridges for $5.95 each and two color #T020201 ink cartridges for $8.95 each plus $8.75 U.S. post office priority mail which was only about $2 more than UPS ground for $38.55 total.  I printed out my receipt.  I also reinstalled the Epson Status monitor, which now works when one prints out.  It has been a very reliable cost effective printer these last three years, but I do not use it too much since I have the laser printers.  Still, it comes in handy for printing out my Christmas letters and other color projects occasionally.  I now have to separate the calling cards that I printed out.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/09/04  Monday 10:05 P.M.:  I just discovered that my calling cards have the wrong email address on them.  The ones that I have been handing out have "mikscot@optonline.net" instead of "mikescot@optonline.net" .  I guess after looking at computers all of these years, my eye sight is not that clear.  I will email the address "mikscott@optonline.net" about the error.  I printed out 58 new calling cards with the right email address.  I emailed mikscot@optonline.net , and it is not a valid email address.  I must have handed out about 150 calling card with the wrong email address.  I guess when one looks at computers all of these years, one has a hard time reading the fine print.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/09/04  Monday 8:40 P.M.:  I went out after the last message.  I made it to my 4 P.M. appointment.  I then drove down by the waterfront and some of the usual fishermen were there.  I then drove over to Radio Shack in Cos Cob, and they have a number of clearance items.  I bought a Radio Shack Digital Home Messenger Center regularly $29.99 for $4.97 plus .30 tax for $5.27 total.  I then sat out downtown for a while.  I returned home, and I put four new AAA Duracell alkaline batteries in the Radio Shack Home Messenger Center, and I tested it, and it works just fine.  It has four message box buttons each of which will record and play back up to 12 messages for a total of 60 seconds for each message box.  I placed it on the right side of the Maple side table next to the Danish bar by the French sitting chair near the wire telephone with the instructions underneath it.  I took the picture of President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush that I had in an inexpensive frame, and I put it in the brass frame that I bought today, and I rehung it in the same location on the right side of the day bed.  I also have another picture of President Bush and the Bush Cheney Inaugural invitation underneath the picture that shows.  I took the inexpensive frame that had a picture of the Russian Tall Ship training vessel the C.R.F. Kruzenshtern , and I hung it on the wall in the bathroom with my other ship pictures.  C.R.F. stands for Czar's Royal Fleet, but in Russian it would be spelled differently.  I then took four family pictures, and I put them in the green and gold floral design frame that I bought today, and I placed it on the left side of the TEAC DVD player beneath the Orion television in the living room.  I am in the process of making up a batch of www.geocities.com/mikelscott/icetea.htm .  Also today when I was coming back from IBM, and I was driving down Glenville Road, which I hardly ever do, I noticed at the old farm on Glenville Road, they have a Farm Stand where they sell sweet corn, and I suppose other produce.  There is another farm stand on West Putnam Avenue near the oil company across from the Chrysler dealership service garage.  The electricity just blinked, but the computer did not go off.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/09/04  Monday 3:10 P.M.:  I was up at 6 A.M. this morning.  I ate breakfast of oatmeal, toast with strawberry jam, orange juice, vitamins, supplements, and coffee.  I checked the weather outside.  It seems to be a nice day.  I just noticed on the internet that IBM www.ibm.com  paid a .18 a share quarterly dividend.  I did not know that that this morning, but after I cleaned up.  I took a blue and a green rubber band, and I fastened them around the Microsoft www.microsoft.com Windows XP SP2 final release CD disks one each in English and German, and I inserted a calling card.  I then drove up to IBM's World Headquarters in Armonk, New York, which is only about five miles north of me in Byram, Connecticut next to Greenwich, Connecticut, I dropped off the two CD disks at IBM's security gate with the security guard for IBM to evaluate.  I mentioned the names of a couple of IBM people that my family is suppose to know.  I noticed they have a helicopter pad by the gate, but the helicopter that was just landing or taking off looked like something out of the Wright Brothers, so maybe IBM should check out United Technologies and buy one of them Sikorsky helicopters like this Sikorsky  .  However, although the helicopter looked like a pile of junk, it might be well maintained, so it might be reliable.  I personally would not ride on that IBM helicopter I saw at the IBM gate, but maybe it was not an IBM helicopter, but just a visitor's helicopter.  I hope the corporate brass at IBM enjoy the final version of Windows XP SP2, which I have found to be significantly better.  I next drove back to Greenwich, and I went by Putnam Trust Bank of New York on Mason Street, and then I went by the Greenwich Hospital Thrift shop, and I bought an 8" X 10" malachite type color in dark green and gold floral design picture frame that is free standing for $5 and a brass 8" by 10" picture from for $1.50 for $6.50 total.  I then went downtown, and I walked the entire length of Greenwich Avenue, and I sat out at various locations.  I toured the Greenwich Hardware store and CVS.  I used the bathroom at the senior and arts center.  I think the senior center serves an inexpensive lunch to seniors.  I then returned home.  I made and ate my usual salad www.geocities.com/mikelscott/salad.htm .  For the cheddar cheese portion, I used Heluva A Good Muenster cheese.  I used all of the other regular ingredients.  I had the salad with a glass of iced tea.  My cigarette order of seven cartons of Seneca Ultra Lights 100s cigarettes arrived from http://www.smokemcheapcigarettes.com/ , and I will open up the package shortly.  I now have 9 and a half cartons of cigarettes which should last me a while.  I have my usual Monday biweekly appointment today at 4 P.M..  CIO

Note: <888> 08/08/04  Sunday 10:45 P.M.:  I ate a bowl of Planter's Dry Roasted peanuts with some iced tea.  I will now shut down the computer, and I will go to bed soon.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/08/04  Sunday 9:55 P.M.:  One of the relatives that I chatted with today told me that some of my other relatives would be coming now to visit on Friday August 13, 2004 in the morning to pick up the day bed from my living room and to take it up to the other relative's house in Kennebunkport, Maine http://www.geocities.com/mikelscott/137.htm . Let's hope it is all right to do it on Friday the 13th.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/08/04  Sunday 8:30 P.M.:  I went out after the last message.  I went downtown, and I walked the entire length of Greenwich Avenue, and I sat out at various locations.  I stopped by CVS, and I bought sixteen 3.75 ounce tins of Beach Cliff sardines in water for two for .99 for $7.92 total.  I then drove down by the waterfront and some of the native American Indians have returned to their Happy Hunting Grounds.  I next sat out for a while on one of the benches at the Greenwich Library parking lot.  I then went by the Stop and Shop, and I bought a 12.5 ounce Maria Callender chicken tenders dinner for $2.29 and a Maria Callender 12.5 ounce turkey white meat slices with stuffing dinner for $2.29, a 16 ounce bag of baby carrots for $1.50, broccoli crowns at $1.49 a pound for $1.44, plum tomatoes at .99 a pound for $1.56 for $9.08 total.  I then returned home, and I put away my groceries, and I drank some iced tea.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/08/04  Sunday 3:30 P.M.:  I chatted with a relative.  I put away the laundry.  I tested my sound card speaker system by listening to http://www.powerfmradio.com/listen.htm .  Those limeys in Lanzarote never get Island Fever.  I made up a fresh batch of homemade hummus www.geocities.com/mikelscott/hummus.htm .  I made and ate my usual salad www.geocities.com/mikelscott/salad.htm .  Instead of tuna fish, I used a tin of chopped sardines.  For the cheddar cheese portion, I used Heluva A Good Muenster cheese.  I used all of the other regular ingredients.  I had the salad with a glass of iced tea.  The Optimum Online mail server is still not working yet.  I will now shut down the computer, and I will clean up, and I will go out.  It is 72 degrees Fahrenheit outside right now http://www.w3.weather.com/weather/local/06830 .  I am worried it is going to be a cold Norwegian winter coming up this winter.  Of course some Norwegians go to Brazil, and they even use to fly the Norwegian flag at the Atlantic Shores Beach club in Key West, Florida, so Norwegians being seafaring people tend to get around.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/08/04  Sunday 1:05 P.M.:  I started two loads of laundry.  I have ten minutes to go on the wash cycle.  I put clean linens on the bed in the bedroom.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/08/04  Sunday 12:20 P.M.:  I chatted with a relative with Net2Phone for an hour.  I have been studying this satellite photo from the Navy Research laboratory in Monterey, California NRL Monterey Satellite Photos , and there is a very large cloud formation over Sub Saharan Africa, which this time of year moves in a westerly direction over the Atlantic, and it is usually such large cloud formations that can create ideal hurricane conditions in the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean depending on other factors like the ocean water temperatures.  I looked for an online link for A.H. Riise in St. Thomas, the Virgin Islands for online duty free shopping, but I guess one can not buy duty free online, and I suppose one would have to actually visit there to buy Duty Free Shopping at AH Riise on Main Street Charlotte Amalie - Photos of St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands .  CIO

Note: <888> 08/08/04  Sunday 10:45 A.M.:  The APC UPS might actually work, but my primary computer setup off the power strip includes the CPU 500 watt power supply, the 19 inch and 21 inch monitors, the cable modem, and the router, so possibly if the wattage on the APC UPS was only like 500 watts, it might not have been able to handle the heavier load off my system.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/08/04  Sunday 10:10 A.M.:  The Optimum email server is not working at the moment.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/08/04  Sunday 9:55 A.M.:  I was up at 7 A.M..  I had breakfast of oatmeal, toast with strawberry jam, orange juice, vitamins, supplements, and coffee.  I went outside, and I chatted with some neighbors.  I chatted with a friend.  I took the APC UPS unit off the plug in the bedroom, and I plugged it into the wall behind the primary computer, and I plugged in the primary computer power strips into it.  I started up the computer, but I guess the APC UPS does not hold a charge, because it lost power to the computer after about a minute after it was started up.  When I tried to reset it, it would not send power to the power strips.  Thus I took it off, and I plugged in the power strip again directly to the wall outlet.  Thus I have the same setup as before.  I will plug in the APC UPS in the bedroom to see if it charges up some more, but I do not think it works.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/08/04  Sunday 2:20 A.M.:  I am tired, so I will now shut down the computer.  I will then go to bed.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/08/04  Sunday 1:50 A.M.:  I sent this note to the Microsoft XP SP2 beta installation and configuration newsgroup:

!!!!!!!!!!
XP SP2 final release installed without any major problems.
On first boot after installation procedure, with CMOS setting for Video of
AGP init
the system froze when the PCI monitor woke up.
On first retry boot with CMOS setting for Video of PCI init
the system froze at the same point.
On second retry boot with CMOS setting for Video of AGP init
the system booted successfully into Windows without anymore problems
recognizing
both monitors and all other devices.  Possibly the first two boots
recognized each monitor or card separately.

I tried to install the latest Nvidia drivers 07/15/04, but they are not XP
certified, and the system
became unstable.  I tried uninstalling them unsuccessfully.  I then did a
System Restore to the original successful install state.
I then reinstalled the same latest Nvidia driver program,
and on reboot the old Nvidia driver from 2003 was installed instead
successfully along with the VIA AGP video bridge
that supports the motherboard from the original VIA 4-1 in drivers that were
already on the system.

Initially Norton Win Doctor 2003 would not work and froze the machine.  I
ran it without the two Active X scans,
and it ran successfully.  I then ran each Active X scan separately, and the
first removed 40 errors and the second removed 18 errors.
After that Norton Win Doctor ran successfully.

Disk Cleanup on the C: drive froze at the Office 2003 setup files. I have
the tweak installed to speed up Disk Cleanup.

Disk Cleanup from the D: drive to remove the old System Restore files worked
successfully.

Over All the system is running just fine after the few minor problems.  It
has about a 25% increase in performance based
on my judgment not Bench Mark.

I am most pleased with the final release particularly with the way it
installed successfully without many problems on my current configuration.

Good Job Microsoft.

Note: <888> 08/08/04  Sunday 12:25 A.M.:  Some relatives are suppose to stop by Saturday August 14, 2004 to pick up the day bed from my living room and take it up to another relative's house in Kennebunkport, Maine http://www.geocities.com/mikelscott/137.htm .  Of course we have planned to move it before, and it has not panned out, so I will believe when I see it.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/08/04  Sunday 12:20 A.M.:  Happy Birthday to a relative.  I installed and activated the Microsoft Reader http://www.microsoft.com/reader/default.asp  , and it recognized the existing books and other Microsoft reader format information my computer.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/07/04  Saturday 11:55 P.M.:  I shut down the Gateway backup computer.  I burned to CD two copies of the XP SP2 final release for the German Version of XP.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/07/04  Saturday 11:10 P.M.:  I have finished the maintenance on the Dell backup computer, and I am just about ready to shut it down.  I am still doing maintenance on the Gateway backup computer in the bedroom.  For beta testers XP SP2 final release to manufacturing is available in English and German presently, and I am downloading the German version in case I run into a German XP SP2 beta tester with a slow internet connection, or maybe I could lose a CD copy of it at the Mercedes Benz dealership here in Greenwich when I have the time.  When I first got into personal computers about 14 years ago this time around, I stopped by the local Greenwich, Connecticut Mercedes Benz dealership, and I gave them a German copy of the Borland Spread Sheet program that I happened to buy from a local Symantec employee at a tag sale or some other unlikely location.  The primary computer seems to be running just fine.  XP SP2 makes the XP system much more responsive, particularly since it refreshes all of the XP files on the system.  Of course to install it, one has to own a registered copy of Windows XP, and it supposedly will not install on pirated copies of XP.  Since I am a registered Windows XP SP2 beta tester as well as a Microsoft OEM, although I have never managed to sell any Microsoft products, although I talk and write about them all the time, I have to go by the rules of Microsoft beta testing and Microsoft OEM representation which are clearly explained on the internet.  It is not within my jurisdiction to release the final release of the beta copy of Windows XP SP2, but I did give a copy today to someone whom knows another beta tester with a slow internet connection.  If word gets around that it is a very stable and reliable final release, I think more people will be eager to try it, when it is finally released to the general public on August 28, 2004 as I recall reading.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/07/04  Saturday 10:15 P.M.:  When I tested the two old HP computers on the side board table in the bedroom, the one with the monitor on the right and the lower of the two stacked CPUs works.  However, the upper HP CPU with the monitor on the left either has a defective SCSI drive or it lost its operating system.  It is an older 233 Mhz.  I will have to test it later on when I have some time.  I am running some maintenance utilities on the Dell backup computer and the Gateway backup computer.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/07/04  Saturday 9:40 P.M.:  I moved my D: drive files temporarily to the C: drive in a D folder.  I then did a full system Automatic System Recovery backup of the entire system to the empty D: drive, and the procedure also creates a floppy disk for XP setup recovery.  I moved the D: drive contents back to the D: drive.  I then did a backup of my key C: drive files, My Documents folder, and music.  I then ran Norton Speed Disk on the C: drive.  They system is running quite well.  I was also able to clean up the old System Restore backup files by running Disk Cleanup on the D: drive, which also has the option to remove all but the newest system restore backup.  I have 8.71 gigabytes of free space on the C: drive and 3.64 gigabytes of free space on the D: drive.  I am also doing some system maintenance on the backup computers.  I need to install the Microsoft reader program on the primary computer when I have time because I still have my saved books on the hard drive.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/07/04  Saturday 6:40 P.M.:  I ran each of the Active X scans in Norton Win Doctor 2003 separately, and they each ran to completion.  They fixed 68 problems.  I then ran an entire scan with Norton Win Doctor 2003, and it showed no more problems.  Possibly when I tried uninstall the Nvidia driver this morning, and it did not uninstall, and then when I tried to install the newest Nvidia ForceWare Release 60 graphics driver http://www.nvidia.com/page/software.html , but instead on reboot the system chose to install the older Nvidia driver and the VIA AGP bridge, it fixed the problem that I was having with Norton Win Doctor.  Basically the VIA AGP bridge is one of the VIA four in one motherboard programs which should have been on the computer already.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/07/04  Saturday 6:10 P.M.:  I made and ate my usual salad www.geocities.com/mikelscott/salad.htm .  For the cheddar cheese portion, I used Helva a Good Muenster cheese.  I used all of the regular ingredients.  I had the salad with a glass of iced tea.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/07/04  Saturday 4:45 P.M.:  I went out after the last message.  I went by Putnam Trust Bank of New York on Mason Street.  I then went by the Greenwich Hospital Thrift Shop, and I bought a APC uninterruptible power supply for $2.50.  I then went downtown, and I walked the entire length of Greenwich Avenue, and I sat out at various locations.  I viewed the 70% off rack at the Greenwich Hardware store.  I toured CVS and starting tomorrow, they will have sardines for two tins for .99.  I used the bathroom at the senior and arts center.  I went down by the waterfront, and I chatted with some of the regular waterfront observers.  I then went by the Greenwich Library, and I read the Greenwich Time.  I then went by the Exxon gasoline station next to the Greenwich Library, and I bought $5 of regular unleaded gasoline at $2.259 a gallon for 28 miles per gallon usage.  I then returned home.  I plugged in the APC uninterruptible power supply in the bedroom next to the Slaymaker battery jump start system.  I will let it charge up for a day before I test it.  I checked my mail.  I got my www.cl-p.com electricity bill, and it was up to $145 in July from $95 in June.  I think there might be some sort of mistake, since normally it is about $95 in July.  I did have the air conditioner for a couple of weeks set at 68 degrees Fahrenheit instead of 70 degrees Fahrenheit, but that should not have made a $50 difference.  The billing period is also for a longer period of five weeks.  Also the electricity rate was raised this past December 2003.  I still have credit on my electricity account, so it is already paid.  I still have $32.10 credit on the account. Connecticut Light and Power is currently deducting the full amount of the bill against the credit instead of the budgeted amount of $95 a month.  CIO

End of Scott's Notes week of 08/07/04:

Note: <888> 08/07/04  Saturday 9:15 A.M.:  I had breakfast of oatmeal, toast with strawberry jam, orange juice, vitamins, supplements, and coffee.  I have Norton System Works 2003 installed on my computer, so the version of Norton Win Doctor is from that package.  I will now send out my weekly notes.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/07/04  Saturday 8:20 A.M.:  I ran Norton Win Doctor without the first two Active X options selected.  I ran CCleaner with the defaults except for cookies.  I ran Norton Fast and Safe Clean Sweep.  I currently have 7.3 gigabytes of free space on the C: drive.  The computer seems to be running just fine.  Earlier when I restored the system with System Restore after I had installed the new Internet Explorer updates interface, I am not sure if I now have the old or the new updates interface, but it currently shows that I do not need any Windows Updates.  I have automatic updates disabled.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/07/04  Saturday 8:10 A.M.:  Last night before going to bed, I ran Norton Disk Doctor.  I just ran Ad-aware 6.0.  I went outside briefly.  It is cool this morning at 58 degrees Fahrenheit http://www.w3.weather.com/weather/local/06830 .  CIO

Note: <888> 08/07/04  Saturday 7:40 A.M.:  I stayed up until midnight.  There are a couple problems with the Windows XP SP2 final version new install.  One is that the computer freezes on Disk Cleanup on the C: drive.  The other is that it freezes on Norton Win Doctor when running the running the first two Active X scans.  I tried fixing this by installing the newest Nvidia ForceWare Release 60 graphics driver http://www.nvidia.com/page/software.html , but that did not seem to improved the system, and it seemed a bit unstable, so I did a System Restore to the way the computer was when I first installed XP SP2.  It now has the Nvidia driver from 10/06/03 version 5.2.1.6, but besides those two problems, the system seems to be running very stable.  I had a telephone call from a friend about 7 A.M. this morning.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/06/04  Friday 10:00 P.M.:  I will now shut down the computer, and I will go to bed.  The Standby feature still does not work, but I never really used that feature much anyway.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/06/04  Friday 9:10 P.M.:  I installed the new Windows Update in Internet Explorer.  In XP SP2 the firewall for my LANS and Bridge are enabled and working.  I ran Norton Win Doctor, and it fixed 17 problems.  I chatted with a relative and a friend.  The computer system is running just fine.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/06/04  Friday 8:25 P.M.:  The XP SP2 final release installation went smoothly on my system except for one minor problem.  After installation and on reboot the first time on my two monitor system booting AGP init in the CMOS when the PCI monitor came awake the system froze.  I then booted again, and set it boot to PCI init in the CMOS and the system froze at the same point.  I then changed my video init in the CMOS back to AGP and booted again, and the system finally booted successfully completing the installation process.  I would imagine the boot process did something with the video.  However, once the system booted, it was setup the same as before with the Windows XP SP2 features.  I did not enable automatic updates.  I did a system restore backup, and then I rebooted again to save my first startup settings.  The system seems to be running normally.  I will now check it out and look for any updates.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/06/04  Friday 8:20 P.M.:  XP SP2 final release is install successfully on my primary computer system!  CIO

Note: <888> 08/06/04  Friday 7:35 P.M.:  Well, it is August and not much is going on, so I will go ahead and install the XP SP2 final release.  If all goes well, I should be back up and running in 40 minutes or less.  I will disable Norton AntiVirus 2004.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/06/04  Friday 7:30 P.M.:  I deleted my seven part C: drive to D: drive backup on the D: drive.  I then did a full backup of the computer system using the Automated System Recovery backup procedure which created one large backup file on the D: drive and a ASR floppy disk that one can run from text mode XP setup by pressing the F2 button.  I also backed up my folders except program and system files, My Documents Folder and the music files. I do not have room on the D: drive for the installed program and system files in smaller backups, but I have it all in the ASR backup. Before doing the ASR backup, I moved the contents of my D: drive to the C: drive, so during the ASR backup the D: drive was empty, and then I returned the D: drive contents to the D: drive from the C: drive.  I was able to download the final version of Windows XP SP2 from the beta site to my D: drive, and I also burned it to a CD.  I am debating whether to try to install it or not.  I went outside a couple of times and watched television while downloading the final release of XP SP2.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/06/04  Friday 1:45 P.M.:  I tested my sound card output into the stereo system with the wire that one connects hanging above the orange mirror.  The sound output from the sound card works in the stereo system when the wires are connected together and the CD option button on the stereo is selected.  I tested it with the XP DVD video of the Living Ocean.  I installed a couple of screen savers from the DVD disk too.  I will now run Norton Win Doctor.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/06/04  Friday 1:15 P.M.:  I scanned the Microsoft Windows XP SP2 beta newsgroups.  I noticed that there was the suggestion for SP2 that if one had an Nvidia video card which I do that one should install the latest drivers in the Nvidia ForceWare Release 60 graphics driver http://www.nvidia.com/page/software.html .  I downloaded the software package, and then I uninstalled my current Nvidia drivers in the Add/Remove software panel.  I then rebooted which is part of uninstallation.  However, when I tried to extract the latest Nvidia software package, the system froze twice.  I then did a Safe Boot, and I was able to extract and install the Nvidia software package.  However, when it came to installing the latest Nvidia GeForce4 MX 440 driver, I was prompted that it had not passed the Windows XP compatibility test, so I did not install it, and I let the Nvidia software package finish its installation process.  I then did a normal boot.  In the device manager, the Nvidia video driver showed a problem, so I tried installing the new Nvidia software package from the extracted file, and then I rebooted.  The Nvidia driver showed a problem in the device manager, so I ran Update driver, and it installed the previous driver version 5.2.1.6 dated 10/06/2003.  I then rebooted, and the system is running just fine.  I had to reconfigure my multiple monitor settings.  However, I am not sure if the current driver would be Windows XP SP2 compatible or not.  However, since presently I do not intend to install SP2 once released, it does not really matter.  One should remember, I tried installing it with one each of the two video cards PCI and AGP and with just the one board AGP video and in all three cases it did not install and crashed my system.  Possibly it is the second hard drive on IDE1 with my Syntax SV266M motherboard, but I do not want to risk a complete system crash to try the SP2 beta currently available.  When the final release of SP2 is released soon, I will look at how it is released whether as one update or a group of updates which might be safer for my particular system.  Around noon I ate a half of a 12 ounce jar of dry roasted peanuts with iced tea, and I just now ate a dozen triscuits with iced tea.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/06/04  Friday 10:40 A.M.:  I finished my house cleaning and watering the plants.  I also cleaned the kitchen stove fan and its filter which gets dirty from my smoking cigarettes there, when I turn on the kitchen fan to smoke cigarettes in my apartment at that location.  I also sprayed Febreze on the fabric items in the apartment.  I also used one of the Electrolux vacuum cleaners to vacuum up behind the long green sofa and the around the edges of the carpet to pick up lose dirt and dust.  Last night I also noticed the Honeywell Hepa air purifier was not turned off, so I turned it on.  It the electricity goes off, it has to be restarted whenever there is a power failure.  I threw out the garbage, and I picked up my mail.  I will now do some computer work.  I figure that although it is a nice day, the purpose of having a computer beside doing computer maintenance on it, is also to do some computer work on it, which I normally do when I am not maintaining it.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/06/04  Friday 7:05 A.M.:  I just ate breakfast of oatmeal, toast with strawberry jam, orange juice, vitamins, supplements, and coffee.  As usual I watched some of the Fox News http://www.foxnews.com/ while having my coffee.  I will now do my house cleaning and watering the plants.  Although I can not put the computer on standby, I can Log Off, and I can let Power Saving features take effect.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/05/04  Thursday 6:45 P.M.:  I played the Microsoft XP DVD Do Amazing Things, and I watched the 40 minute video about the Ocean.  If one moves the Windows Media Player to the center computer Sony Monitor, and turns on the Orion television and selects the AV mode for AUX 2 with the Orion remote, one can view the same content on the larger television monitor in very good quality.  One also has to enable the Creative Live MP3+ sound card, and there is a feed into the television monitor for sound.  However, since I have so many speakers plugged into the Y jacks plugged into the two sound card speaker ports, the output into the television is very weak, and one has to put the television sound on maximum volume which I do not like doing to get weak audio.  I suppose on could connect the two wires on the orange mirror to the right of the primary computer, and since the wire feeds into the stereo system, if one presses the phono button on the stereo amplifier as I recall or the CD button or one of the two, it plays the computer sound card output into the apartment stereo speaker system which should be loud enough since it is amplified, however one would have to be careful not to disturb the neighbors.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/05/04  Thursday 4:50 P.M.:  I downloaded installed the Microsoft Windows Memory Diagnostic Program http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp , and I created the memory test boot diskette, and I ran one cycle of the memory test, and my computer memory passed the memory test, so my computer memory is just fine.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/05/04  Thursday 4:10 P.M.:  I relaxed a bit.  I went outside briefly.  I assigned the usual password to Windows logon, so I can log off and activate the screen saver and secure the computer, since standby mode does not work.  According to Microsoft to activate Standby, I would have to reinstall the operating system.  However, since to reinstall the operating system, I would have to disable the features such as power management that Windows XP recognizes and thus installs the Standby feature, thus Standby probably would not be installed anyway, and I would be back to the current state.  Microsoft announced that it will release Windows XP SP2 soon, but I do not intend to install it.  In my earlier notes, I mentioned that when I did the new install of Windows XP, I tried installing Windows XP SP2 RC2 on my system with the Syntax SV266M motherboard with all of the cards, USB, other devices removed and disconnected, and the CMOS settings all disabled that could be disabled, and SP2 RC2 would crash the system, and one would not be able to recover from it except to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows XP.  I thus do not have the time to risk crashing my system just to install the SP2 update.  Also I already have downloaded and installed all of the other updates, so I have most of SP2 anyway.  However, I did not disconnect the second hard drive on IDE1 which supposedly can cause a problem on installation and possibly with XP SP2 installation.  However, I do not want to take the chance to see if that would permit me to install XP SP2.  Having spent five weeks mostly full time to get the system back to its current state, I do not feel like facing a major period of reconfiguring my computer.  Also possibly beta testers might get a free copy of the full version of the final release.  If I do get that, I can put it on my Dell backup computer.  Since I have Norton Internet Security 2004, I already have most of the same security features if not better offered by XP SP2.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/05/04  Thursday 2:35 P.M.:  I do not have my 3 P.M. appointment today or next Thursday.  I went out after the last message, and I went by the Greenwich Hospital Thrift Shop.  All of their merchandise continues to be half price.  I bought a two tiered oak CD rack about 18 inches by 12 inches by about 5 inches for a dollar.  I then went downtown, and I spent a dollar parking, and I walked the entire length of Greenwich Avenue, and I sat out at various locations.  I stopped by the Greenwich Hardware store 70% rack in the front of the store, and they still have two sets of snow chains on sale.  They also have 75 watt sunlight bulbs for about $10.  I then went by CVS, and I bought two 11.5 ounce Kraft Pasta Anytime microwave alfredo meals for $1.99 each for $3.98 total.  I then completed my walk.  I sat out for a while.  The flower bed around the veterans monument has flowers that sort of look like red snap dragons, and they are attracting a lot of bumble bees this year, particularly in the early morning hours.  I then drove down by the waterfront, and I chatted with one of the regular fishermen.  I then went by the Stop and Shop, and I bought seven 6 ounce cans of Bumble Bee solid white albacore tuna fish for $1 each, two 6.5 ounce dry weight cans of California black pitted olives for .99 each, a 10 ounce box of fresh mushrooms for $2.29, a five pound bag of yellow onions for $3.49, a 10 ounce bag of fresh spinach for $1.99 for $16.75 total.  I remember something while I was sitting on the veterans bench downtown.  I put the Microsoft Windows XP presentation DVD CD in my Microsoft Windows XP presentation bag at my bedroom entrance along with the TS/2 presentation bag which has the TS/2 DVD disk.  I put both of the DVD disks by my primary computer on the top CD rack to have ready to view.  I next returned home, and I picked up the mail.  I put away my groceries.  I put the new CD rack on top of the existing two shelf wicker rack to the right of my primary computer chair, and I rearranged the computer CDs in both racks with the most important ones towards the top.  Thus I have more room for computer software CDs if I can ever afford them.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/05/04  Thursday 9:05 A.M.:  I took down the Saudi Arabian flag from the center hallway bookcase, and I folded it up, and I put it in the center drawer of the living room long mahogany bureau on the far right side underneath some clothes.  I decided the current weather is too cool, so more than likely any Saudi Arabians would not be showing up anytime soon.  Basically the Saudi Arabian hospitality flag is occasionally flown trying to curry favor with the energy people in hopes to get more heating assistance for my apartment and our building which tends to be rather cold during the winter.  We do not actually expect any Saudis would show up for hospitality, but I recall during the cold winters of the early 1980s in Manhattan, the Saudi Arabian flag was flying along the United States flag at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York, and it was about the only place in Manhattan that was actually warm.  Since at the moment, the general public might be suspicious of middle eastern symbols, I will not fly it for now.  I made and ate my usual salad www.geocities.com/mikelscott/salad.htm .  For the cheddar cheese portion, I used Heluva A Good Muenster cheese.  I had the salad with a glass of iced tea.  I will now shut down the computer, and I will clean up, and I will go downtown for some errands.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/05/04  Thursday 6:15 A.M.:  The relative visiting Campobello, Maine visited Canada during the trip and told me there is a bridge across the Bay of Fundy going into Canada.  I recall that the Bay of Fundy has fifty foot ocean tides, so one should be careful, if one is thinking about going clamming there.  The local weather is cooler here in Greenwich, Connecticut http://www.w3.weather.com/weather/local/06830 down into the mid 50s Fahrenheit at night.  I suppose with four volcanoes having gone up in Indonesia in the past five weeks and one expected to go off 80 miles west of Anchorage, Alaska, they might be making the weather in the north country cooler.  I suspect with the cooler summer this summer, we might be in for a colder winter this upcoming winter will mean we will have more expensive heating bills.  It is currently 63 degrees Fahrenheit this morning at 6 A.M. in Greenwich, Connecticut.  My August bill for Connecticut Light and Power http://www.cl-p.com/ is not posted yet, but I have a surplus in my electricity account from the NEON Energy assistance program.  They July bill usage was about $95.  Of course using my energy assistance to stay cool in the summer, when I actually might need it more during the cold winter is a decision that I have made, since computer equipment generally needs to be kept cooler.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/05/04  Thursday 5:35 A.M.:  I ran Ad-aware 6.0.  I just remembered that one is suppose to clean one's air conditioner filter once a month.  I had not cleaned it since this past mid April.  I removed the front grate, and I cleaned it with my potato brush and soapy water.  Beside the filter that came with the General Electric Profile 15,500 BTU air conditioner with remote control, I have a standard foam air conditioner filter draped over the original.  I cleaned both of the filters in soapy hot water, and I rinsed them underneath cold water and I squeezed out the water from the foam filter.  I then reinstalled the filters and the front grate.  I spread the foam filter over the front of the original filter, and then I make sure it is stretched to fit, and then I secure its edges by reinstalling the original filter underneath.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/05/04  Thursday 5:00 A.M.:  I went to www.georgewbush.com/contribute/ , and I donated $5.  I printed out a receipt.  There is something wrong at the donation site, because it was difficult to print out the receipt page, which did not want to be printed out, but I finally go it to print out.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/05/04  Thursday 4:25 A.M.:  The General Electric Service contract web site started working www.GEAppliances.com/spp , so I paid my Service Contract on my General Electric Profile 15,500 BTU air conditioner with remote control for the next billing period from September 12, 2004 through September 12, 2005, and of course it was already paid up through September 12, 2004 before I made this payment.  I printed out four copies of the receipt.  I paid for it with my Bank of New York MasterCard Debit card.  The cost was $75.95 plus $4.56 tax for $80.05.  Well, I now do not have to worry about the air conditioner until September 12, 2005.  It a in home service contract, so if anything goes wrong, all I have to do is call them.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/05/04  Thursday 4:10 A.M.:  I went to bed after the last message.  I had a telephone call from my Thursday 3 P.M. appointment telling me it is cancelled for the next two weeks because of vacation.  I had a telephone call from a relative on vacation in Campobello, Maine.  Later on I chatted with another friend whom might be coming down to visit this afternoon.  I was up at 2 A.M., and I had breakfast of oatmeal, toast with strawberry preserves, orange juice, vitamins, supplements, and coffee.  I went outside, and it is raining lightly.  I checked my mail from yesterday, and I received the Service Contract Bill from  General Electric Service Protection Plus out in South Dakota at 1-800-626-2224 www.GEAppliances.com/spp , and it is less than quoted on the telephone earlier this week.  It is $75.95.  I could pay it over the internet, but currently their payment web site does not work or with personal check, but I generally pay large purchases with U.S. Postal Money orders, so I will go to the bank and the post office this morning to pay the payment on the air conditioner service contract.  They offer a similar air conditioner today, but it does not come with Remote Control, but it is less expensive.  When I bought my air conditioner for $585 plus tax from Partridge and Rockwell, the box and instructions said 15,500 BTU, but on the side of the air conditioner chassis, it says 14,000 BTU.  I can not figure out why GE does not offer it with the remote control anymore.  I think the Panasonic model comes with a remote control.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/04/04  Wednesday 12:45 P.M.:  Well, I went outside briefly.  I ate half a 12 ounce jar of Stop and Shop dry roasted peanuts with some iced tea.  I will now shut down the computer, and I will go to bed.  Life on the night side of Greenwich is not as exciting as life on the day side.  I suppose all of the nine to five office types are strutting their stuff during vacation, but I also suppose since they have homes to maintain, they are probably doing a little bit of maintenance themselves while the weather is warmer.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/04/04  Wednesday 11:50 A.M.:  I made and ate my usual salad www.geocities.com/mikelscott/salad.htm .  I put a tin of chopped sardines in the salad instead of tuna fish.  For the cheddar cheese portion, I used Heluva A Good Muenster cheese.  I used all of the other regular ingredients.  I had the salad with a glass of iced tea.  I watched some television.  I am just ending my day, so I do not plan to go downtown.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/04/04  Wednesday 9:50 A.M.:  I ran Norton Win Doctor.  I ran Norton Disk Doctor.  I then ran Norton Speed Disk.  I then went outside briefly while Norton Speed Disk was running.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/04/04  Wednesday 9:05 A.M.:  I tested the sound card sound system with the Andrea Electronics headset and computer speakers, and it did not work at first, and then I got the blue screen error.  I then rebooted, and there was no problem with reboot, but for the Creative Live MP3+ card in Sounds and Audio devices, it installed a D version of the SB Live! Sw Synth driver, however the Andrea Electronics microphone headset works just fine as do the computer speaker setup and the Panasonic headset.  I then returned the setting back to the Plantronics headset, and it works just fine too.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/04/04  Wednesday 8:30 A.M.:  I shut down the computer.  I then traced the input wire from the Stereo System to the computer.  Basically it is large jack plug not connected to the front stereo headphone output jack hanging on the left side of the Queen Anne chair beneath the stereo system.  It can be plugged into one of the double terminal jack plugs which now hold the plugs for the Emerson wireless headphones and the Stereo headphones that are hung from the living room desk.  I connected that wire where it connects behind the living room desk, and then again beneath the laser printer table, and the final end is connected into a Y adaptor that also contains the Andrea Electronics microphone which Y adaptor is plugged into the sound card microphone jack, since the sound card does not have an input jack.  When I rebooted, the system recognized a new Media Control Device in the Sound setting of Device Manager.  In the Audio setting for Sounds and Audio Devices, there is a new sound setting of SB Live! Synth [FF80] which sounds just fine with Plantronics headset instead of the Microsoft device setting.  Since it installed itself that way automatically, I assume that is the preferred setting.  I did not test the stereo to sound card input, but I assume it works if plugged into the stereo output jack on the front of the stereo as mentioned before.  However, when the Andrea Electronics microphone is plugged into a Y adaptor, it tends to have a weak signal.  As I recall the stereo input this way works fine though.  I also have another headphone set hanging on the left side of the Queen Anne chair that can be connected to the stereo system headphone output jacks.  Since both stereo input and output cables to the computer sound card are currently disconnected, it does not pose a risk to the computer ground fault setup should the stereo system have an electrical surge.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/04/04  Wednesday 7:15 A.M.:  In the Sounds and Audio devices settings, I turned off the Windows XP sounds, so the system sounds will not interfere with the online audio sounds.  Since I mostly used the Plantronics DSP 500 headset, I changed the audio settings from 4 speakers to headset.  If I enabled the Creative Live MP3+ sound card, I would also want to enable the 4 speaker setting for my computer speakers.  I technically could do this since my neighbor downstairs below the flat roof moved to another apartment, so that apartment downstairs is temporarily vacant.  However, at night I might disturb my neighbor directly downstairs too, but that apartment has the bedroom beneath my bedroom, and my adjacent neighbors on my floor next to my computer setup corner which is next to their living room corner, so they would probably not notice it at night.  However, in the daytime, they might hear the speakers.  Thus although I have ten computer speakers set up on my primary computer system, I never use them.  I also have three speakers on the Dell backup computer and a pair of speakers on the AMD backup computer.  I also have 15 speakers in the apartment connected to my stereo system, but I do not use them much since I might disturb my neighbor on the other side.  I also have the Emerson wireless headphones connected to the stereo system.  I also have a Panasonic headset connected to the Creative Live MP3+ sound card which would work off the sound card if the computer speakers are turned off.  It also has the Andrea Electronics headset connected to it.  I also have a regular set of headphones connected to my stereo system which I have hung underneath the living room desk.  I can also connect the output from Creative Live MP3+ sound card by connecting the cable hanging on the orange mirror to the right of the primary computer which is connected to my stereo input to play computer sound into the stereo system.  I think I have a cable setup to input sound from the stereo system into the sound card, but I think it is currently disconnected and lost in all the cables around the computer system.  I also have audio output from the sound card to input into the Orion television when one uses it as a third computer monitor for viewing internet video.  Thus I have a wired multimedia system which I hardly ever use, so I will not disturb my neighbors.  I basically spend so much tweaking the system, I hardly ever use its other multimedia capabilities.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/04/04  Wednesday 6:40 A.M.:  I went outside briefly.  When one subscribes to Optimum Online cable modem service, one gets the Rhapsody music service for free.  I tried using it, but it kept counching out.  I finally changed my Plantronics DSP500 USB headset from the D-Link powered hub which runs off the USB PCI card but is separately powered, and I changed it to one of the front two CPU USB 2.0 ports, and it was recognized plug and play, and at least with Rhapsody it is all working just fine, and it is not counching out.  I am listening to 50s Rock.  I suppose the D-Link hub powering the cable modem USB connection, and the D-Link LAN USB connector was getting too much through put.  Anyway it is working just fine with the Plantronics DSP 500 headset plugged into one of the front USB 2.0 ports.  I could buy a USB 2.0 PCI card to replace the USB 1.0 PCI card in the computer, but I think the Plantronics DSP 500 headset is the only device that works better with USB 2.0, but it is not persay a USB 2.0 device.  I guess that would mean that Net2Phone with the same headset would work better too.  I unplugged the four port USB device with the longer cable from the left rear of the Sony monitor, and I plugged it into the vacant port on the D-Link USB hub with LAN.  I placed the four port hub with the longer cable on the lower right side front of the Sony Monitor.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/03/04  Tuesday 5:30 P.M.:  I watched some summer reruns on television.  They seem to be pretty much the same reruns we had last summer.  I noticed recently that Warren Buffet's wife whom died recently was summering in Cody, Montana.  Someone I once met whom is in the railroad business also lives in Cody, Montana, and Buffalo Bill was also from Cody, Montana.  I recall Jimmy Buffet was also from Montana.  I use to tell people if they ever had to hide out in the United States of America, they could go to Truck Stops of America in Montana, which I believe is somewhere in the middle of Montana on Interstate 90.  They then could venture out a day or two in different directions, and be truly lost in the great open spaces of America.  Of course some people whom prefer their creature comforts just visit Canada, where the Canadian dollar is less expensive than the U.S. dollar.  Of course the United States of America under increased terrorism watch is watching its borders more closely.  I suppose by now people are at their summer destinations.  Whatever the case pretty soon it will be cooler again, so one should use the warmer weather to get ready for the colder weather.  Since some of us stay here on a full time basis, we have a different perspective of our local community than the summer visitors have.  Basically from what I know the town of Greenwich remains pretty much the same as it always is for this time of year.  I have noticed the people around recently seem a little bit heavier, but since I put on a bit of weight in the last 12 years sitting at the computer, I suppose other people have too.  Maybe the older more sedentary people are simply more visible during the warmer weather.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/03/04  Tuesday 1:35 P.M.:  I picked up my mail.  I got a subscription offer from Newsweek magazine for the Newsweek Professional Network for $25 a year, but since I do not have the time to read Newsweek, I will not subscribe.  I have a good friend whom seems to have time to read Newsweek, but at the moment he is cruising with his family from New York to Bermuda through Hurricane Alex www.geocities.com/mikelscott/weather.htm , so lets hope Queen Victoria's daughter's relatives in Bermuda will offer him the usual British Security, which he is usually entitled too.  However, I think he is from a United States Navy family as well as a Great Britain family, so I would imagine he would know more about Bermuda customs that I do.  I once sailed with the same friend from Piraeus the port of Athens, Greece to Crete on an overnight voyage through rough seas in the Mediterranean, but the 20 foot waves we experience then might be surpassed by the hurricane waves now, but from the reports that I have read, it is not too intense of a hurricane.  If he had a problem, he could always call me up, and I could check with some local U.S. Navy people if they could help out.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/03/04  Tuesday 12:15 P.M.:  I went out after the last message.  I went downtown, and I sat out for a while.  I walked from my usual parking area up Greenwich Avenue to the Greenwich Hardware store.  I looked for the shorter three inch 25 watt tubular bulbs, but they only carry the four inch ones.  I then used the bathroom at Starbucks, and I sat out for a while.  I then drove down by the waterfront.  I next went by the Stop and Shop, and I bought two quart jars of Stop and Shop strawberry jam for $2.99 each, four 16.5 ounce bottles of Monari balsamic vinegar for $2.50 each, ten 6 ounce cans of Bumble Bee solid white albacore tuna fish for a $1 each, four 8 ounce bars of Heluva A Good Muenster cheese for $1.99 each, a 28 can of Goya chick peas for $1.29, four 6.5 ounce dry weight cans of California black pitted medium olives for .99 each can, four 3 ounce cans of Stop and Shop grated parmesan cheese for .99 each, and four 3 ounce cans of Stop and Shop grated parmesan and Romano cheese for .99 each, and two 96 ounce containers of Tropicana low acid orange juice for $2.99 each for $53.09 total.  I then returned home, and I put away my groceries, and I drank some iced tea.  I always rotate my stock, when I buy new items, so the older items are at the front of the shelf.  I next went to the Vitamin Shoppe at the Port Chester, New York A&P shopping center, and I bought 100 capsules of E-400 with EPA and DHA for $13.17,two jars of 100 capsules of Niacinamide 500 mg. for $4.77 each, a jar of 100 capsules of deodorized garlic 500 for $5.37, a jar of 100 tablets of one daily no iron multivitamins with lutein and lycopene for $13.17, and a jar of 100 capsules of B-Complex 100 for $9.47 less a $10 off coupon for a purchase over $50 for $45.49 total.  I then parked at the Food Emporium in Greenwich, and I walked next door to the Fashion Light Center which is hard to park at, and I bought three Bulbrite 25 watt medium base torpedo frosted bulbs long life 2500 hours for $1.35 each plus .24 tax for $4.29 total.  I then went to the Food Emporium, and I bought two 13.5 ounce Lean Cuisine Chicken Florentine dinners for $2.39 each, and a Chicken with mushrooms and a Chicken Fettuccini dinner each for $2.39 each for $9.56 total.  I then returned home, and I put away my groceries.  I drank some iced tea.  I put two of the 25 watt frosted Torpedo bulbs in my picture light that hangs above the print copy of Rembrandt's Polish Rider, the original which hangs in the Frick Museum in New York.  The torpedo bulbs are cheaper than the tubular bulbs and they last longer.  In metal fixtures, one does not put in two great of a wattage, because it can cause the fixture to overheat.  I put the remaining torpedo bulb and the good remaining tubular bulb from the picture light in my light bulb drawer in the mahogany bureau in the bedroom.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/03/04  Tuesday 7:00 A.M.:  I ran RegClean and Norton Win Doctor.  I made and ate my usual salad www.geocities.com/mikelscott/salad.htm .  For the cheddar cheese portion, I used Stop and Shop Swiss cheese.  I used all of the regular ingredients.  I had the salad with a glass of iced tea.  I will now go back out, and after a while downtown, I will do some grocery shopping at the Stop and Shop.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/03/04  Tuesday 5:25 A.M.:  I went out after the last message.  I went by the Valley Road post office, and I mailed the payments on my Cablevision, Optimum Online, and Verizon bills.  I then went downtown, and I walked the entire length of Greenwich Avenue including the train station area, and I sat out at various locations.  I next drove down by the waterfront, and one of the regular fishermen were there.  I then drove over to CVS at the Riverside Shopping Plaza, and I bought two 16.9 ounce spray bottles of Febreze spray fabric deodorizer for $1.99 each, two 20 ounce jars of Planters Dry Roasted peanuts for $1.99, two 11.5 ounce Kraft Pasta Anytime alfredo dinners for $1.99, a 16 ounce spray bottle of Renuzit Super Odor Neutralizer orchard garden scent for $2.99, a 100 yards of CVS mint waxed dental floss for $1.99, four 4 packs of Duracell coppertop AAA batteries for $1.99 a four pack, a 72 tablet bottle of Tums Maximum Strength Ultra assorted fruit tablets for $2.99 plus $1.02 tax for $28.89 total.  I then went by the Food Emporium, but their computers for the Food Stamp card were not working, so I did not buy anything.  I chatted a bit about technology with the night stock clerk.  I then returned home.  I sprayed some of the Febreze spray fabric deodorizer on my sofas and other furniture fabrics in the apartment.  I drank some iced tea.  When I first booted the computer, a device driver gave the computer the blue screen of death which normally never happens.  When I rebooted the second time, the system recovered and is running normally.  I will go out later this morning for some grocery shopping after 7 A.M..  CIO

Note: <888> 08/03/04  Tuesday 1:15 A.M.:  I ate a dozen triscuts with iced tea before going to bed.  I was up at 11:30 P.M..  I had breakfast of oatmeal, toast with strawberry jam, orange juice, vitamins, supplements, and coffee.  I made out checks to pay my Verizon, Cablevision, and Optimum Online bills, and I have them ready to mail.  I will now clean up, and I will go out for a walk and other errands.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/02/04  Monday 1:25 P.M.:  Microsoft Money Central http://moneycentral.msn.com/investor/home.asp has updated their portfolio tracking program.  My Kensington cordless wheel mouse which came with Kensington cordless keyboard just froze.  I replaced the two AAA batteries with Energizer AAA batteries, and it is working just fine now.  I do not use the Microsoft Intelipoint mouse driver which works with it giving other options because I think it is more responsive with the PS/2 mouse driver.  However, I can not check the battery level until it runs out.  There is nothing wrong with the Microsoft Intelipoint driver, but if one gets the options wrong, it can mess up.  I could use the Kensington Mouse driver, which I quit using because it did not wake the computer up from Standby, but since Standby does not work, that option is not relevant at the moment.  I was thinking of shutting down, but I will try to stay up for a while to get on more of a daytime schedule.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/02/04  Monday 12:15 P.M.:  I went outside, and I picked up my mail.  I received my Verizon, Cablevision, and Optimum Online bills, which I will make out checks for later on today, after I sleep.  I called General Electric Service Protection Plus out in South Dakota at 1-800-626-2224 www.GEAppliances.com/spp , and they told me they had sent me a new bill for $80.35 to cover my maintenance contract on my General Electric Profile 15,500 BTU air conditioner with remote control that I bought in June of 2000.  I should receive the bill soon, and I will pay it when I receive it to keep the maintenance contract in force.  My current contract expires September 11, 2004.  I put the stamps and my rent receipt on the bedroom desk.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/02/04  Monday 11:25 A.M.:  I went outside after the last message, and I met up with the building custodian as he was arriving for work.  He gave me a new florescent circular bulb for the kitchen light fixture, and I installed it myself.  I did not throw out the old fixture right away until I was sure the new one worked when the fixture was off for a while.  I next drove over to the Arnold bread outlet, and I bought two 5.5 ounce boxes of Arnold Italian regular cut croutons for .99 and two 5.5 ounce boxes of Arnold Garlic and Herb large cut croutons for .99 each and a fresh loaf of Arnold 12 grain bread for $2.19 for $6.15 total.  I then went by Gateway Automotive, and I bought four one inch tire valve extenders for .25 each for a $1 total.  I put them on my tires, and I put the three valve caps in the glove compartment.  I next drove down by the waterfront.  I then went by the Greenwich Hospital Thrift Shop.  Everything is 50% off.  I next went by Putnam Trust Bank of New York on Mason Street.  I then went by the Wachovia Bank on Benedict Place, and I paid my rent.  I then went downtown, and I went by the central Greenwich Post Office, and I bought 20 U.S.A flag stamps for .37 each for $7.40 total.  I next went by the Stop and Shop, and I bought fresh broccoli crowns at $1.69 a pound for $1.34, two Stop and Shop 3 ounce Parmesan and Romano grated cheese for .99 each, buy one get one free of 12 ounce Stop and Shop dry roasted peanuts for $2.29 both, a 8 ounce bar of Heluva a Good Muenster cheese for $1.99, and a 16 ounce bag of baby carrots for $1.50 for $9.10 total.  I then returned home, and I put away my groceries.  The kitchen light worked, so I threw out the old circular florescent light bulb.  I put $10 on my laundry card, and I now have $19.55 on my laundry card.  I drank some iced tea.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/02/04  Monday 7:10 A.M.:  I chatted with a friend.  I made and ate my usual salad www.geocities.com/mikelscott/salad.htm .  Instead of tuna fish, I used a tin of sardines that I chopped.  For the cheddar cheese portion, I used Stop and Shop cheddar cheese.  I used all of the other regular ingredients.  I had the salad with a glass of iced tea.  Remember to keep track of www.geocities.com/mikelscott/weather.htm .  Tropical Storm Alex is still out there.  I will now shut down the computer, and I will clean up.  I will then go out for a brief spell and do some errands.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/02/04  Monday 5:55 A.M.:  I tried the Windows XP Professional Upgrade update install option, but on reboot the computer still froze.  I returned the system to way it was before I tried it.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/02/04  Monday 5:25 A.M.:  I ran the Add New Hardware wizard, and it installed Advanced Power Management APM on my computer, which I enabled.  I changed some power management settings in the CMOS, but the Standby feature still is greyed out, when one goes to Turn Off the computer.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/02/04  Monday 5:05 A.M.:  I just fixed something major on the computer.  Under Device Manager, my computer was listed as a MPS Uniprocessor PC, and I was able to change it to Standard PC.  When I rebooted the setting was installed plug and play, and when I was prompted to reboot again, I also enabled the onboard motherboard USB ports in the CMOS, and when the computer booted it no longer had the option for MPS Uniprocessor PC, but only Standard PC, which is the desired option.  Also I tested my front USB 2.0 ports with the removable pin drive, and my onboard USB ports now work too.  I put the pin drive back on the right rear of the Sony monitor.  I guess this is because the computer is setup as a Standard PC.  Well, I now have a surplus of USB ports besides my three four port hubs, I have four USB 1.0 ports in back of the CPU case and two USB 2.0 ports on the front of the case.  However, I could remove the PCI USB card and install the LAN card, but since the onboard USB ports use power from the motherboard, I will continue to use my D-Link independently powered USB LAN hub.  Since the computer works fine as is, I will not change the current setup.  I do not think the Standard PC setting would make a different in trying to upgrade Windows XP by the upgrade method, since I think the install procedure takes that hardware setting into account.  Still, it is nice to have the onboard motherboard USB ports working and to have the right computer CPU setting.  It should make the computer more reliable.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/02/04  Monday 3:45 A.M.:  I went outside briefly.  On this page towards the bottom http://forums.viaarena.com/messageview.cfm?catid=13&threadid=56161 , there is a procedure list for installing Windows XP on a VIA 266M system, which is basically the procedure I went through a few weeks ago, when I installed the operating system.  There was one other suggestion that suggested if one has a second hard drive on the first IDE cable, one should disable it.  Since at the moment, I have my system configured and it is running fine, I do not want to go through the hassle of pulling all of the cards and reinstalling the Windows XP operating system via the upgrade method and then having to reconfigure my system again.  I will make a copy of the step by step list linked above.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/02/04  Monday 3:20 A.M.:  I tried copying my Windows XP Professional Upgrade CD to the C: drive, and I then tried an upgrade installation from the copy on the C: drive, but it still does not reboot setup.  I returned the system back to its previous state.  The only way that I can think the installation might work is if I disabled the multiple monitor feature in Windows XP, and then tried an installation with either AGP or PCI only working, but I recall trying this before, and it did not work.  Still since the computer is running fine, I will not worry about it.  I really do not feel like putting anymore money into a 20 month old computer, particularly since a better upgrade motherboard and case that would hold a motherboard with more PCI slots would cost about 2/3 of the price of what a new system with everything installed would cost.  Since it has worked just fine for this long, I will not worry about it.  I guess I will not be trying to install Windows XP SP2, since I do not want to risk having my system crash.  Basically, my Syntax SV266M motherboard is an inexpensive but reliable motherboard, and if I just upgraded the case and motherboard, I would still have other old parts in my system, which would need to be replaced sooner or later.  Still for now, it is all working just fine.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/02/04  Monday 12:50 A.M.:  I uninstalled and reinstalled the Plantronics DSP500 program.  When I installed it before, it prompted me to install parsedrv.exe, and when I did that all my sound setting were set at default maximum which is a bit loud.  With that setting, when one listens to it, it automatically reduces the volume except it does not automatically reduce the volume with Net2Phone.  Thus by not installing parsedrv.exe and just installing the Plantronics program, one is able to set one's own preferences for the sound settings.  Also some times the speaker icon shows up in the tray and sometimes it does not.  I have a Sounds and Audio Devices icon on the desktop, so one can restore the speaker icon, if it happens not to show up.  Also sometimes the Norton Internet Security 2004 Firewall icon does not show up in the tray too.  One can get around this after rebooting, if they do not show up, by logging off and then logging back on, and they seem to show up the second time around.  Also Microsoft Messenger, sometimes wants to log on twice.  Basically the computer is running just fine.  Although, I can not reinstall Windows XP via the upgrade method the way I use to do, and I can not figure out why not.  Also the onboard motherboard USB ports do not recognize USB devices, so I disabled them, and I am using a PCI USB card.  Also the Standby mode does not work, since Advanced Power Management does not show up in the power settings, but I hardly ever used Standby.  Power saving features do seem to work though.  Thus after a month the computer is completely restored back to a better state, and it works just fine too.  I also noticed that with the Network Bridge enabled connecting the three network connections to the cable modem, one can not turn off the cable modem and the Siemens router from the control panel, and then have them work, when one turns them back on. If one wants to run the computer without the cable modem for utility maintenance, one needs to boot the computer with the cable modem and Siemens router turned off.  If one turns off the Cable modem and Siemens router while they are working with the Network Bridge and the three Network connections to the cable modem, one has to shut down, reset the cable modem by turning it on and off with the Siemens router turned off, and then boot the computer with the cable modem and the Siemens router turned on.  I would not have this problem, if I just used the onboard motherboard LAN, but I like having the three Network connections to the cable modem.  By connecting them all together with the Network Bridge feature in Networking, it keeps all three networks alive simultaneously, and they do not need to be restored or enabled.  Thus it is a more stable system.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/01/04  Sunday 8:55 A.M.:  I ran Norton AntiVirus 2004 a few times, and I analyzed the fact that it freezes.  I turned off the power saving features in the CMOS and the power saving features in Windows XP, and it did not freeze.  However, it kept freezing towards the end of the scan at "C:\Windows\Driver Cache\i386" probably on the 72 meg file driver.zip .  I turned off scanning of compressed files, and it still froze at the same location.  However, since at that point which is most of the hard drive, it did not find any viruses, I assume my hard drive is virus free.  Since I can not delete the file, although it is a compressed file, I will just have to live with it as it is.  I returned my power saving settings to their usual state.  I watched some television while Norton AntiVirus 2004 was running.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/01/04  Sunday 6:50 A.M.:  I tried running Norton AntiVirus 2004 before I went out, but it froze again.  I will have to study the Symantec web site to see if I can find the fix, or I guess I can reinstall or repair it.  I went out after the last message, and I walked the entire length of Greenwich Avenue, and I sat out at various locations.  I chatted with another morning walker and a town employee.  I next drove down by the waterfront and two other of the regular fishermen were there.  I just now returned home, and I chatted with a couple of neighbors.  I drank some iced tea.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/01/04  Sunday 3:40 A.M.:  I made and ate my usual salad www.geocities.com/mikelscott/salad.htm .  Instead of tuna fish, I used the remaining half inch wide strips of cold eye round of beef.  For the cheddar cheese portion, I use Stop and Shop Swiss cheese.  I used all of the other ingredients.  I had the salad with a glass of iced tea.  For the last two days, when I woke up the kitchen ceiling florescent light would not turn on, when I tried to turn it on, and I had to remove the fixture cover, and adjust the wire harness into the circular tubular florescent bulb get it to turn on.  Possibly it needs a new circular tubular bulb, which the building custodian provides.  I will leave it on all the time for now, so I do not have to go through the hassle of getting to turn on.  I will now shut down the computer, and I will clean up.  I will go out for a walk after that.  It is suppose to shower at 7 A.M. this morning, so I am going out earlier.  CIO

Note: <888> 08/01/04  Sunday 1:05 A.M.:  I put the ice tea in the refrigerator.  I have the backup Gateway computer all configured.  I am running a maintenance utility on it now.  It has about 5 gigabytes of free space on the 8 gigabyte hard drive.  Its inboard telephone modem works too, and I downloaded the Juno free dialer on it, but I did not install it, however it would be available for use if the cable modem did not work.  I also have the Juno free dialer download saved on my primary computer and installed on the Dell backup computer.  The Gateway has onboard sound, but I do not have speakers or a headset plugged into it. The sound jacks are on the rear of the Gateway.  It also has two USB ports on the rear.  It seems to be running just fine, and like all five backup computers they are online with the cable modem and configured for use along with the primary computer.  I still have the old IBM Cyrix which is configured but not connected up.  Thus I have seven desktop computers in the apartment and two old laptops for a total of nine computers along with all of their devices and monitors.  CIO
