Thursday 6:40 A.M. When I graduated from
Lake Forest College in 1972, I tried living in Chicago for a while as a
republican, but I did not make much head way.
I lived next door to a 40 story www.ibm.com
building, and I also lived at 31 East Elm Street, but nobody was interested in
somebody from Boston with an Economics B.A. Degree from Lake Forest College, so
late in the fall of 1972 after having visited St. Thomas, I drove back east
with George Gordon Cary whose family have distant connections with Brown
Brothers Harriman, but none of his relatives were interested in me either.
I
will now turn off the bedroom computer, and I will switch to the living room
computer. I write better, when I am
cooler though.

Thursday 6:05 A.M. Hurley Harris
Haywood’s stepfather that I met was Don Reuben who was the head attorney for
Hertz Rent a Car. His grandfather
General Hurley was Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s ambassador at large, and he was
the first American to deal with Mao Se Tung, when he was just a house painter,
before he started making political signs like Adolf Hitler did. Even in Fort Lauderdale, the oldest high rise
on the beach is called the Illini named after the alumni of the University of
Illinois, so I guess since it gets colder in the Midwest, a lot of farmers whom
do not farm in the Winter go down to Florida to do something else, I
suppose. Of course, during times or
major wars, a lot of people get moved around the country depending on what
their skill sets are. Fairfield County
in Connecticut has half a population of people from the Midwest. A relative used to know the owner of the
Chicago Tribune, before he passed away last summer. R.R. Donnelly out of Chicago publishes
thousands of magazines including Time Life in the old days. They also have an office in nearby Stamford,
the last I knew.
I
now will go outside again.

Thursday 5:55 A.M. Even though I went to
Lake Forest College with classmates from Minnesota, I have only been there
twice on a round trips to Deborah on the Thousand
Islands north of Sauté St. Marie with friends for a wedding of a friend, where
I could not take pictures because Howard Hughes was in the church. I did drink some Corby’s whisky out for a
five-gallon bottle in a water cooler though.
I also returned the same summer with Hurley Harris Haywood of the Harris
Trust Bank in Chicago for a Can Am automobile race, and the only time I drove a
Ferrari, was when I got to drive his racing partner’s yellow Farrari back. We were even on the A.B.C. Wide World of
Sports when we were parked in the infield of the race. Maybe I had had something to drink. All the people in Chicago know each other, so
when one group of them got tired of me, they just handed me around to another
group of local people. I guess because a
lot of them had been back east to college and private school, they were sort of
curious about me going to college in the Midwest. I even met Billy Morgan whom ran away from
Lake Forest Academy and attended Yale for four years in Bill Clinton’s class,
and got away with it, since he was a big kid.
However, when he returned to Lake Forest, they made him start off where
he had left at Lake Forest Academy. He
did take me and a friend to the Arlington Race Track. At the time he was working for Amway, and he
was also making Rolls Royce Commercials with his home movie camera. The Duke of Windsor even once visited Lake
Forest, Illinois. I think around 1958 in
the winter Queen Elizabeth II showed up in Chicago with the Royal Yacht
Brittania, but I am still confused how they got the big Yacht into Lake Michigan
before the St. Lawarence Seaway was built.
Obviously with the steel meals in Gary, Indiana; they know how to build
big ships on the Great Lakes which are not too small.

Thursday 5:00 A.M. I went outside
again. As a matter of dispute, back in
the summer of 1980, when the price of gold went from $225 an ounce in June 1980
to $825 an ounce in August 1980, when Jimmy Carter was President and Walter
Mondale a Norwegian American was vice president and Admiral Stanfield Turner
was the head of the www.cia.gov , I decided
after my fifth trip via air to California and Hawaii to visit Norway with a
friend whose father whom worked for the United States State Department back
then in Libya as a software engineer. I
got a new passport with my friend at the State Department office in
Stamford. I then bought a used Volvo
from John Delia Subaru in Greenwich for $1250, and it came registered, and I
had it insured by Rand Insurance in Greenwich.
After a few stops, when I was with my friend picking up his luggage on
Bar Beach Road in Port Washington, Long Island, I saw four blond youth on
motorcycles with Connecticut plates behind the used Volvo. When I got back to New Canaan to pick up my
luggage, the Jan Sport back pack in the trunk of the used Volvo was gone along
with my eight ounces of gold and two hundred dollar bills along with my new
United States passport, my Connecticut driver’s license, and my Wellesley,
Massachusetts draft card. Thus, I
cancelled my plans to go to Oslo, Norway.
I reported the theft to all of the local police departments involved,
and nothing came of it. Instead, I drove
off with my friend from Manhasset, Long Island to Provincetown, and then to
Hanover, New Hampshire, Montreal, Toronto, and then down South to Key West and
back across country on Interstate 10 and drove around the coast of California
spending a lot of time in Santa Barbara and camping out at the camp ground next
to Reagan’s ranch. At the time, my friend
thought his grandfather lived in Santa Barbara, but it later turned out to be
Santa Rosa. His grandfather might have
been the geologist from the University of Toronto that discovered the oil in
Saudi Arabia for J. Paul Getty who was a neighbor of a relative in Tulsa,
Oklahoma. On the day after the election
when Reagan won, I sold the Volvo at a cash for your car place next to
Disneyland and flew back with my friend to Manhattan. On later investigations, I found out the
United States State department can not track lost passports. However, American Express told me that my
passport was being used in Amsterdam in the Netherlands two months after it was
stolen. Thus, the thief using the
passport and the gold might have been somebody that looked like me. Also, later
I learned that Ghost Motorcycle in Manhasset, Long Island was owned by someone
from Fairchild Electronics that also has offices at the Portland, Maine
airport. Thus, someone with access to
Fairchild Electronics might have had a tracking device on the used Volvo from
which I was robbed. Also, Fairchild
Electronics was also a major competitor of Polaroid in its day. When I went to President Reagan’s inaugural
in January 1981, I had a little chat with Admiral Stanfield Turner whom I had
seen a couple of times in my travels around America. He was always wearing a straw hat, when I saw
him. Since possibly his son was a
roommate on the Farm at Lake Forest College and since he was from Highland
Park, Illinois, he might have known some of my connections. President Reagan made Dick Caney the head of
the C.I.A., and he was from Rosalyn, Long Island near Plandome Manor, Port
Washington, and Manhasset, Long Island.
Thus it would seem to me as a private civilian I have been exposed to
some dirty tricks by persons unknown.
I
will now go outside and drink and instant coffee.

Thursday 3:55 A.M. Back to the cool
bedroom computer setup. Living up North
most of my life, I am used to colder temperatures. Even when I ended up in Oslo, Norway in
February 1983, when I was traveling to Stockholm, Sweden round trip on S.A.S.,
the six feet of snow in Oslo did not really bother me too much, since after ten
months of building the garage apartment for Vivian West out in Plandome Manor,
Long Island for 12 hours a day with no days off working mostly all night for
about $2 and hour, I was a bit worn out and tired. Thus I probably slept a bit when I end up in
Oslo, Norway by mistake. Since half of
my $8,000 in Barclay’s travelers checks had disappeared mysteriously in my
brief travels before arriving in Oslo, Norway; and Barclays could not do
anything about it, the Best Western Hotel behind the palace in Oslo let me stay
there, until the United States embassy in Oslo got a $2,000 payment from my
father for my Best Western Hotel stay and return trip to J.F.K. airport on
S.A.S. on a new 747, and they gave me a hundred dollar bit for all of the
walking I did around Oslo in the winter.
I spent a week homeless at J.F.K. airport watching all of the Easter
travelers, then when I checked out the garage apartment again, a friend gave me
a hundred bill, which I used to fly back to Nantucket from LaGuardia airport to
resume my dishwashing career. Since
about that time, I heard the Mianus Bridge had fallen down in Greenwich, I did
not think about returning sooner. When I
finally returned on December 13, 1983 the Aga Khan’s birthday, when he was
living in Greenwich as high commissioner of refugees at the United Nations, the
Greenwich Hospital gave me a complete $7,500 physical which determined I was
disabled, and Greenwich Social Services put me on welfare to pay my medical
bills and the cost of $240 a month for a simple room in the attic at 100
Milbank Avenue, and $240 a month to live on for food and other expenses. Six month later, I
moved to 700 Steamboat Road to a studio apartment for $400 a month that
Greenwich Social Services paid for along with the same $240 a month for food
and expenses. After 4.5 years, I moved
to my current public housing in December 1988 in the Byram section of Greenwich
across the street from where my mother once lived in Putnam Green. What goes around comes around. Thus by my
perspective, I am doing a bit better today.
